Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The sterile processing technician receives, cleans, decontaminates and sterilizes reusable patient care equipment, instrumentation, and supplies. Disassembles, inspects, inventories and assembles surgical instrumentation and procedural trays. Maintains adequate inventory levels for all surgical instrumentation/trays and supplies. Records and maintains required sterilization records. Serves as technical contact person for questions concerning decontamination and sterilization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Verifies, prints and assembles the perioperative surgical schedule daily.

2. Coordinates perioperative room instruments and equipment needs utilizing the perioperative surgical schedule.

3. Coordinates suitable substitutes for specific instrumentation.

4. Serves as preceptor in the training and development of new employees.

5. Maintains daily sterilization records.

6. Responds to instrument and equipment requests from physicians.

7. Operates all sterilization and decontamination equipment in accordance with departmental policy and procedures safely and efficiently.

8. Assume responsibility for professional growth and development by participating in continuing education programs and by helping to initiate such programs as necessary and participate in mandatory in-services.

9. Adhere to the ASC’s Policies and Procedures.

10. Maintains work areas in a clean, neat and orderly fashion on a daily basis.

11. Cleans work area prior to end of shift in preparation for oncoming shift.

12. Participates in the cross training for new surgical instrumentation and equipment.
