What is a surface data logger?

A Surface Data Logger is a professional responsible for monitoring, recording, and analyzing drilling data at the surface during oil and gas exploration and production. They operate specialized equipment to collect real-time data on drilling parameters such as pressure, temperature, mud properties, and rate of penetration. This information is crucial for drilling safety, efficiency, and decision-making. Surface Data Loggers work closely with drilling engineers and geologists to provide accurate and timely data throughout drilling operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a surface data logger?

To thrive as a Surface Data Logger, you need a solid understanding of geology, drilling operations, and data acquisition techniques, often supported by relevant technical training or a degree in geosciences. Familiarity with surface logging software, gas detection equipment, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work well under pressure are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate data collection and reporting, which are critical for safe and efficient drilling operations.

What are some key challenges surface data loggers face when working in the field, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Surface Data Loggers often encounter challenges such as harsh weather conditions, remote or difficult-to-access locations, and managing large volumes of data accurately under time constraints. To overcome these, it is important to be well-prepared with the appropriate field gear, maintain clear communication with the drilling or data acquisition team, and implement efficient data management practices. Familiarity with logging equipment, troubleshooting common technical issues, and a proactive approach to safety also contribute greatly to success in this role.

What is the difference between Surface Data Logger vs Geotechnical Technician?

Join Our Mission

At Omega Technical Services, every role supports a mission that matters. Whether you're advancing national security, driving innovation in nuclear infrastructure, or supporting critical DOE and DoD operations, you’re part of something bigger here.

Omega Technical Services is seeking a highly motivated Solutions Architect 4 to support ongoing operations in Los Alamos, NM.

Serve as the client-side senior authority on SAP data migration; face off to the System Integrator's data lead as a technical peer. Review and challenge the SI's data migration approach and push back where the approach carries unnecessary risk, cost, or downstream operational burden. Advise the program on migration architecture decisions specific to greenfield S/4HANA from non-SAP sources (Oracle EBS, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, custom systems), including source-to-target data model translation and legacy-concept-to-SAP-concept mapping. Advise on tooling selection when the SI's approach is still open and evaluate trade-offs on fit, cost, timeline, and regulated-industry auditability.

Duties:

  • Serve as the client-side senior authority on SAP data migration; face off to the System Integrator's data lead as a technical peer.
  • Review and challenge the SI's data migration approach and push back where the approach carries unnecessary risk, cost, or downstream operational burden.
  • Advise the program on migration architecture decisions specific to greenfield S/4HANA from non-SAP sources (Oracle EBS, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft, custom systems), including source-to-target data model translation and legacy-concept-to-SAP-concept mapping.
  • Advise on tooling selection when the SI's approach is still open and evaluate trade-offs on fit, cost, timeline, and regulated-industry auditability.
  • Own day-to-day execution coordination of the client-side data workstream across all domains.
  • Keep the migration task plan current, flag slippage early, and drive resolution.
  • Serve as the daily point of contact with the SI's data migration team; track integrator deliverables and escalate delays.
  • Run regular working sessions with client data owners and the integrator's team; chase open actions, decisions, and deliverables between meetings.
  • Set and monitor cleansing standards across data domains against agreed quality thresholds; validate that the SI's quality criteria are fit for S/4HANA go-live.
  • Coordinate with business data owners to keep cleansing on schedule; unblock issues with the right people rather than deferring upward.
  • Surface data quality risks the SI may not flag (missing legacy concepts, silent data loss in transformation, dependencies across domains) before they become critical.
  • Organize and track mock load cycles across all domains.
  • Review reconciliation results independently of the SI.
  • Ensure business teams complete validation tasks within cycle windows and that findings are actioned.
  • Ensure data migration activities comply with the organization's data classification policy and applicable regulatory requirements throughout extraction, staging, transformation, and load.
  • Prepare data readiness inputs for go/no-go decisions and provide informed, independent risk assessment to program leadership.
  • Support hypercare on data-related issues post go-live.
  • Support migration status reporting and RAID logging for program leadership.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related enterprise SAP implementation experience may be considered in lieu of the degree.
  • Relevant SAP certifications are highly desirable.

  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Satisfactory results of a pre-employment screening, which includes a drug and breath alcohol test, along with a Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.
  • 15+ years leading enterprise SAP data migration workstreams, with at least 4 full-lifecycle S/4HANA programs delivered end-to-end (greenfield preferred).
  • Experience running the data workstream from inside a major System Integrator on programs of significant scale and complexity, followed by client-side advisory work.
  • Deep hands-on experience migrating from non-SAP sources into SAP.
  • Full-scope enterprise migration experience spanning Finance (FI/CO), Supply Chain (MM, SD, PP, WM), HR/HCM, Plant Maintenance / EAM, and Master Data (business partner, material, customer, vendor).
  • Working expertise across multiple migration toolsets.
  • Demonstrated focus on delivery quality.
  • Comfortable engaging SI leadership as a peer: knows when to escalate, when to accept an SI's judgment, and when to hold position; can distinguish genuine constraints from convenient ones.
  • Hands-on advisor: runs working sessions, chases actions, maintains plans day-to-day, and retains senior-level judgment throughout.
  • Deep understanding of S/4HANA data models, business partner concept, universal journal, material ledger, and the structural changes from legacy ERPs.
  • Strong grounding in data migration methodology: ETL design, staging strategies, reconciliation, cutover sequencing, fallback planning, and hypercare data support.
  • Regulated-industry experience with hands-on exposure to at least one of HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI-DSS, GDPR, FedRAMP, or comparable frameworks.  Demonstrated ability to translate compliance requirements into data migration controls.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; can move fluidly from executive readouts to deep technical review with the SI's data engineers.

  • Possession of an active DOE/DoD clearance within the past two (2) years is preferred.
  • Previous DOE/NNSA work experience.
  • Prior experience specifically with Oracle EBS as the source system.
  • Familiarity with SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) and its role in S/4HANA data landscapes.
  • Experience with Databricks, Snowflake, or similar platforms as staging or reconciliation environments for large-scale migrations.
  • SAP certifications (S/4HANA, Data Migration, or comparable).
  • Experience in regulated environments beyond baseline compliance — audit-heavy sectors such as financial services, healthcare, life sciences, pharma, or government.

Shift will be dependent upon customer site discretion.
