Job description

Primary Function: The NACE Coating Inspector monitors and inspects the coating process and provides documentation of the work.  This individual has the overall responsibility for performing, and the documentation of, the coatings applied to the steel main.  The NACE Coating Inspector will verify adherence to federal, state and the utility compliance procedures and processes.  Providing technical expertise, documenting changes to engineered designs are pertinent for project success.  The NACE Coating Inspector works cohesively with the Welding Inspector by verifying the coating installation is in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend all construction, safety and project update meetings assigned by the Chief Inspector and address any project concerns
  • Using Magnolia River’s project management software, create daily reports on all activities on the job site associated with the cathodic protection and coating installation. Reports must be grammatically correct
  • Verify the construction contractor(s) and subcontractor(s) installation of cathodic protection for the client to connect the cathodic protection. Fulfill each requirement in accordance with the client’s engineered design and scope of work
  • Overall responsibility for awareness of the client’s expectations for project completion and project documentation. The documentation at a minimum includes:

·        Contract specifications

·        Cold applied wrapping procedures

·        Alignment sheets

·        Construction drawings

·        X-Ray Contract(s), Specifications and Review

·        DOT 49 CFR 192

·        Applicable state and local government codes

·        Safety policies, regulations

  • Observe pipe stringing and stacking to prevent damage to pipe and/or coating
  • Observe and verify calipers, slings and/or pipe resting on skids have sufficient padding to prevent damage to pipe and/or coating
  • Verify construction contractor personnel are properly trained in field coating process
  • Observe the construction contractor personnel are applying the field coating in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification
  • Verify calibration of instruments and document the results
  • Observe the use of a jeeping or bell ringer instrument and note the voltage setting meets the engineering standard based on the mill thickness, the instrument is properly grounded, and the batteries are properly charged
  • Properly mark the pipe and as-built prints for holidays detected, observe the speed of the detector, coating and/or coating repairs are completed as per manufacturers specifications
  • Verify and observe safety adherence throughout the day. Attend tailgate and other safety meetings.  Report all incidents, near misses and unsafe activities to the Chief Inspector verbally and through email
  • Verify the coating personnel have the OQ qualifications required by the client

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in the use of spreadsheets, databases, and word-processing
  • Excellent oral and written (including proper spelling and grammar) communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills to produce accurate project records during construction.
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Ability to read construction prints, sketch as-built construction drawings and/or to use software for construction diagrams
  • Ability to adhere to safety standards and take a proactive role in reducing risk
  • Ability to meet project deadlines
  • Ability to rapidly establish creditability and relationships with a broad range of individuals.
  • Ability to perform assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • A minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in the natural gas industry
  • NACE certification is required.
  • Experience inspecting coating installation, removal and surface preparation for coating and repair of defective coating areas is required.

Additional:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, maintain vehicle insurance as required

 

Physical Demands:

  • Extensive travel required.
  • Duties are performed primarily in an outdoor setting with exposure to changing weather conditions.
  • Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily productive/technical nature.
  • Ambulatory across uneven surfaces of a construction excavation work zone, climb in and out of ditches using a ladder, frequently bending at knees and waist.
  • Capable of working outdoors which may require exposure to various environmental conditions, including the potential presence of:
    • stinging insects such as bees, wasps, and hornets. Employees must be able to recognize and avoid insect habitats, follow established safety protocols, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
    • domestic animals such as dogs and cats
    • wildlife such as snakes, deer, and small mammals
  • Must be able to perform work in a very loud, active construction environment.
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with co-workers and clients. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
