What is a superintendent?

Superintendents are the top-level managers of school districts. In this career, your responsibilities include conferring with principals and other school administrators to determine the needs of each school and their students. You are ultimately responsible for school performance, the hiring of administrators, and securing more funding for your school district. Your duties as a superintendent also include working closely with numerous public organizations and government departments, including the local board of education, the Department of Education, city council, and state legislators, to improve or institute new curriculum, funding streams, and rectifications of issues of health and safety.

What does a superintendent do?

A superintendent is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a school district, construction site, or other large organization, depending on the industry. In education, superintendents manage budgets, set district policies, work with school boards, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. In construction, a superintendent supervises onsite activities, coordinates subcontractors, ensures safety standards, and keeps projects on schedule and within budget. Their leadership is crucial for achieving organizational goals and maintaining smooth operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a superintendent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Superintendent, you need strong leadership, project management skills, and a background in construction or education administration, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with industry-specific software (like Procore or educational data systems), building codes, and safety regulations is typically necessary. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities set exceptional Superintendents apart. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, team coordination, regulatory compliance, and a safe, productive environment.

What are the most common challenges superintendents face when managing multiple construction projects simultaneously?

Superintendents often juggle several construction projects at once, which requires exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing demands. Coordinating schedules, managing subcontractors, ensuring safety compliance, and addressing unexpected delays or changes are frequent challenges. Successful Superintendents rely on clear communication, proactive problem-solving, and strong leadership to keep projects on track and maintain high-quality standards. Regular collaboration with project managers, engineers, and field crews is also essential to navigate these complexities effectively.

What is the difference between Superintendent vs Project Manager?

AspectSuperintendentProject Manager
CredentialsRelevant construction certifications, OSHA trainingProject management certifications, PMP often preferred
Work EnvironmentOn-site, overseeing daily construction activitiesOffice and on-site, coordinating project phases
Industry UsageConstruction companies, general contractorsConstruction firms, project-based organizations
Primary FocusSupervising on-site work, safety, quality controlPlanning, budgeting, client communication

The main difference between a Superintendent and a Project Manager lies in their focus areas. Superintendents are primarily on-site, managing daily construction activities, safety, and quality. Project Managers handle project planning, budgeting, and client relations, often working both in the office and on-site. Both roles are essential in construction projects but serve distinct functions to ensure successful project completion.

Job description

Titan LLC is growing.

For years we've built our reputation as one of Alaska's premier sitework, civil, landscaping, snow, and outdoor construction contractors. Now we're expanding our vertical construction division and looking for an experienced Construction Superintendent who wants to help build something from the ground up.

This isn't a role where you'll inherit a mature department and simply maintain it. We're looking for a builder—a Superintendent who takes pride in running projects, leading crews, solving problems, and helping shape the future of a growing construction division.

If you enjoy wearing multiple hats, making decisions, and having a direct impact on a company's growth, we'd like to talk.

What You'll Do

• Lead day-to-day field operations on commercial, residential, and design-build construction projects
• Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and self-perform crews
• Develop and maintain project schedules to keep projects on time and on budget
• Ensure all work meets quality standards, contract requirements, and building codes
• Conduct site safety meetings and maintain a safe work environment
• Review plans, specifications, RFIs, submittals, and project documentation
• Collaborate with ownership, project managers, estimators, and clients
• Identify and resolve field issues before they become project delays
• Track manpower, production, and project progress
• Assist in developing field procedures and best practices as the division grows

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of Superintendent, Foreman, or field leadership experience
• Commercial construction experience strongly preferred
• Experience managing multiple subcontractors and project schedules
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
• Self-starter mentality with the ability to work independently
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
• Alaska construction experience is a plus

Experience In Any Of The Following Is Highly Desired

• Commercial construction
• Tenant improvements
• Ground-up construction
• Design-build projects
• Structural concrete
• Wood and steel framing
• Sitework and utility coordination
• Government or public works projects

What We Offer

• $90-$100k base salary
• Company truck
• Fuel reimbursement
• Paid time off
• Opportunities for advancement
• Year-round work
• The opportunity to play a key role in building a new division from the ground up

About Titan LLC
