Fire Protection Engineering Intern | New York, NY

This posting is for Summer 2027 Internship opportunities.

IMEG is hiring a Fire Protection Engineering Intern in New York, NY. Over 10-12 weeks, you'll assist in the analysis, design, and implementation oversight of fire protection systems in buildings. You'll work closely with experienced engineers and consultants on active projects.

In this role, you'll support work within project budgets and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. You'll contribute to projects connected to hospitality, mixed-use, office/commercial, and broader MEP work in a team with strong aviation, terminal, and urban interiors experience.

What You'll Do

Assist with fire protection system design for projects in accordance with code and IMEG standards

Research commercially available equipment and supporting resources

Support client relations, maintain the project design notebook, and document permanent record files

Coordinate design and scheduling with other disciplines, including architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, and equipment suppliers

Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring project design progress

Review project documents for accuracy and completeness before final check

Prepare and issue addendum information

Conduct periodic job site observations and other services required by the contract services agreement

What You'll Bring

Education

Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required

Required Skills/Abilities

Strong interest in design consulting

Proficient with MS Office Suite including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook

Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software

Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Preferred

Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

Physical Requirements

Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds

Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull

Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises

State of New York Pay Range: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.

Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate's experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
