Description
Do you have experience working with diesel, hybrid, and electrified heavy equipment and are interested in teaching the next generation of technicians? Our Hybrid Diesel Equipment Technology (HDET) and Electric Vehicle & Energy Storage (EVES) programs are expanding to meet regional workforce demand. We are seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member to teach courses supporting medium- and heavy-duty hybrid diesel and electric equipment used in transportation, construction, agriculture, and related industries. This is a 9-month position anticipated to begin August 2026.
Courses taught may include, but are not limited to: Hybrid Diesel Equipment Fundamentals; Heavy Equipment Braking, Steering, and Suspension; Heavy Equipment Engine Repair; Electrical & Chassis Control; Drivetrains; Electrical Diagnostics; Climate Control & Thermal Management; High-Voltage and Hybrid Powertrain Systems.
The primary duty of faculty members is to teach. In addition to teaching, class preparation, grading, and holding office hours, general responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Create a learning environment that fosters student success and the attainment of defined learning outcomes
  • Participate in developing and reviewing curricula and instructional methods
  • Assist in the articulation of courses within the division
  • Develop, integrate and evaluate student learning outcomes within the framework of the Heartland Community College assessment protocols
  • Remain current in one's discipline
  • Advocate for student persistence and pathways to completion through cooperation with Student Success and Enrollment Services staff
  • Manage student issues and problems in a manner consistent with the Student Handbook
  • Serve the institution in a variety of ways; examples of service activity include, but are not limited to, participation on teams and committees, assistance with marketing and recruitment events, and promotion of a collegial work environment
  • Participate in program review

The hired individual may be expected to teach a range of courses as assigned.
Requirements
Applicants are not required to have a formal degree, but must have:
  • Minimum of 2,000 hours of successful work experience in diesel, heavy equipment, hybrid, or electrified vehicle systems
  • Demonstrated ability to teach or train others in technical environments
  • Availability to teach daytime and/or evening courses
  • Ability to work effectively and inclusively with diverse populations of students, employees, and industry partners

Desired Qualifications
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), or other industry-recognized certifications
  • Experience with hybrid diesel systems, high-voltage systems, EVs, or electrified heavy equipment
  • Experience using industry diagnostic tools and software
  • Teaching, training, supervision or mentoring experience
  • Curriculum development experience
  • Experience with instructional technology
  • Experience supporting or collaborating with business/industry partners

Anticipated starting salary range for this 9-month position is $48,356 - $65,034, plus any applicable pay for overload and/or summer assignments.

EMPLOYEE LEAVE
Sick Leave: 10 days per year, pro-rated from employment date
If hired in August, 10 days (80 hours) of sick leave awarded on start date; If hired in January, 5 days (40

Monthly accrual in subsequent years starting every August
Awarded 16 hours of sick leave for teaching 6 or more ECH in Summer term; Awarded 8 hours of sick
leave for teaching 3-5 ECH in Summer term
Personal Leave: 5 days (40 hours) per year, pro-rated from employment date
Unused personal leave converts to sick leave days at the end of employment year
Volunteer Leave: 1 day (8 hours) per year with no annual carry-over
8 hours awarded on start date, then annually awarded at the start of the calendar year on January 1
Bereavement Leave: Up to 5 days (40 hours) per occurrence
Parental Leave: 4 weeks (160 hours) for qualifying events, once per 12-month rolling period
Holidays: The College is closed on the following holidays:
Labor Day, Election Day (Presidential Election years only), Wednesday through Friday of Thanksgiving week, Christmas Eve Day through New Year's Day inclusively, Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Independence Day
