About the Role
T. Baker Smith is seeking a Senior Project Structural Engineer to plan, design, and direct engineering projects while serving as a technical leader within the project team. This role works closely with the Project Manager and is heavily focused on the technical execution of projects, with opportunities to support overall project management as needed.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, mentoring others, and delivering high-quality work that enhances the communities we serve.
What You'll Do
Technical Leadership & Project Planning
  • Lead technical tasks on assigned projects
  • Participate in project planning, including scope, schedule, and budget development
  • Develop design concepts and technical solutions
  • Maintain current knowledge of engineering software, design techniques, procedures, and regulations
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and technicians on technical design tasks

Project Deliverables
  • Prepare or modify reports, computations, specifications, plans, studies, permits, and designs
  • Develop quantity takeoffs, construction documents, and cost estimates
  • Ensure drawings and designs comply with project requirements and applicable standards

Collaboration & Communication
  • Coordinate closely with the Project Manager, project team members, and clients
  • Participate in project, client, and public meetings, including occasional evening meetings

Quality, Schedule, & Budget Management
  • Optimize scope, schedule, and budget under the direction of the Project Manager
  • Communicate changes in workload, project scope, schedules, and budgets
  • Direct and review work to ensure quality control and compliance with firm standards

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise engineer interns, newly licensed professional engineers, and project technicians as needed

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
  • 10+ years of engineering design experience with advanced technical expertise
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with clients and team members at all levels
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical documents
  • Proficiency with engineering and technical software, including CAD, spreadsheets, and business applications

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity to operate computers, calculators, and phones
  • Vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment

Work Environment
  • Responsibilities performed in both office and outdoor environments
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, and other environmental factors
  • Travel with overnight stays required

Hours & Schedule
  • Full-time position (40+ hours per week)
  • Position may be exempt or non-exempt
  • Occasional nights away from home and weekend commitments required
