Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Morehead Planetarium and Science Center opened in 1949 as the first planetarium on a college campus in the United States. During the 1960s and 1970s, Morehead trained 62 NASA astronauts (including 11 of the 12 men who walked on the Moon) in celestial navigation. By Morehead's 50th anniversary in 1999, more than five million spectators - half of them schoolchildren - had visited its Star Theater to learn about the cosmos.
Morehead expanded its mission in 2000, becoming not only a gateway to the stars, but a gateway to all the sciences. Today, its programming reflects the expanded mission to help people better understand science, technology, and health through state-of-the-art full dome planetarium shows, exhibits, camps, hands-on classes, and statewide outreach programming.
In 2020, Morehead completed a $9M renovation that expanded its exhibit space which now includes more than 6,000 square feet of exhibit space that highlight a range of science disciplines.
Position Summary
Morehead Planetarium & Science Center is looking for talented college students or recent college graduates to work in our Summer Science Camps from June 15 - August 7, 2026. We offer exciting, hands-on summer camps to kids from rising kindergarten to rising eighth grade. During the summer, campers explore different areas of science through experiential lessons and unique engagement opportunities.
If you are passionate about education, science, or working with children, please consider sharing your excitement with campers in Chapel Hill as a Summer Camp Lead Counselor. Our staff enjoys a schedule that is flexible around summer classes, on-campus employment, and an extremely fun and dynamic work environment! Mandatory camp training sessions will occur May 29 - June 1, 2026.
Job duties include:
• Training on science content and curricula geared towards kids ages 5-13 (If you don't have a science background, don't worry - we'll teach you!)
• Learning best practices for teaching camp activities, including working with campers with special needs, using inclusive teaching methods, and general camp management
• Leading science activities for groups of up to 20 campers with a High School Assistant Counselor and Counselor-In-Training
• Maintaining a structured camp environment as the primary counselor responsible for planning and preparing activities, organizing materials, classroom management, and being a role model for High School Assistant Counselors and Counselors-In-Training
• Supervising a High School Assistant Counselor, Counselor-In-Training, and campers to ensure camp runs smoothly and safely
• Communicating with camp administrators regarding camp incidents, materials needs, and general camp updates
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Management Preferences
Experience working with children; High level of responsibility, organization, and resourcefulness; Strong verbal and written communication skills; Experience with summer camp programs; Morehead Summer Science Camp experience; Bilingual proficiency; Driver's license preferred.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Moderate physical effort is required. Counselors may spend time teaching inside and outside (based on camp activities). Prolonged periods of time will also be spent outside during pick up and drop off periods.
