Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator --Decatur, IL
This is an non-exempt level position.
Position Summary:
The Treatment Plant Operator is the responsible person in charge of treatment plant operations and lab analysis for the assigned portion of the plant during their shift. Additional responsibility for accurately completed paperwork as required by our various permits and operating agreements, notification of government entities required by permits, collection and delivery of samples required by permits.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Review daily reports.
  • Notification of high loading or flow rates to processing plant supervision.
  • Monitor equipment operations, adjust as necessary to maintain proper operation and compliance.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot and resolve process problems.
  • Collect shift and daily samples. Testing of shift and daily samples.
  • Evaluate plant operation and consult with Superintendent as needed.
  • Review upcoming jobs for needed permits and procedures, verify needed documents and safety equipment are available.
  • Review and use wastewater plant procedures, including LOTO, SOPS, CSPS & MOC.
  • Monitor chemical inventories and communicate with the appropriate persons to make sure shipments are scheduled as needed to fill the needs of the department.
  • Monitor, verify and adjust for proper chemical usage rates throughout the wastewater plant and cooling towers.
  • Operation of 2 pressurized flammable gas plants.
  • Lo-Cat chemistry samples.
  • Retention ponds - verify and monitor proper retention pond operation.
  • Collect storm water samples after rain events.
  • Conduct monthly inventory.
  • Inspect sanitary lift stations, samplers and equipment. Verify proper operation, and perform calibrations as needed.
  • Complete all plant and corporate required training.
  • Weekly fire system inspection.
Required Skills:
  • Will be required to test for and obtain a Class K wastewater certificate.
  • Must have valid driver's license.
  • Strong commitment to safety.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office required.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan priorities effectively.
  • Strong communication skills for coordination, training, reporting and analysis.
Education Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
Required Experience:
  • Will be required to test for and obtain a Class K wastewater certificate.
Desired Experience:
  • Prior experience with process operations is preferred, but not required.

  • Relocation assistance is not available with this position.

  • The scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, and cleaners common to mechanical work that may be hazardous and/ or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/ storage are not properly followed.
Water
  • The scope of this position requires work in close proximity to water as well as water storage facilities, ponds and lagoons. May require use of boats or other floating equipment for the assessment and maintenance of these facilities.
Inside areas
  • Spring/ Summer: Temperatures in some areas of the facility will be up to or exceed 100 degrees F.
  • Fall/ Winter: Outside temperatures may reach freezing or below. May be exposed to inclement weather including freezing rain, sleet, snow, and wind.
  • Some manufacturing processes within the facility are highly reliant on machinery and other processing equipment and, as a result, noise levels may reach or exceed 85 decibels and require use of hearing protection for most of the work shift.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis.
  • Lifting or carrying of weights over 50 pounds is rare. Employees are encouraged to request assistance in lifting or carrying objects that weigh more than 50 pounds.
  • Able to traverse up to two (2) miles during the course of a work day.
  • Able to move about or to a work site by stooping, bending, kneeling, or squatting frequently during the course of a work day. May require periods of prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Able to operate equipment or diagnose/ detect issues of machinery that may be located at different heights. May require work on ladders, scaffolding or other work at heights.
  • Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically powered tools and instruments. To move throughout the facility, including climbing stairs in all buildings, and to work at heights.
