Northwest Park Nature Specialist

The Town of Windsor, CT is seeking a Nature Specialist to join Camp Foxfire at Northwest Park. Our 473-acre campus offers diverse ecosystems for children, (ages 4-14), to explore and learn. The Nature Specialist will conduct engaging environmental lessons, lead field trips, and support camp staff while fostering curiosity and appreciation for nature.

Camp Foxfire features six themed weeks, offering diverse educational experiences for campers. The Nature Specialist's role involves working with different age groups daily, adapting pre-designed lessons to align with each week's unique theme.

This is a full-time temporary summer position with a start date of Wednesday, June 17, 2026 and ending Monday, August 10, 2026. Applicants who can commit to all work dates receive hiring preference. The hourly rate is $19.60 per hour and the work schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday Friday, 8:15am-4:30pm, with an unpaid 15-minute break each day.

First Aid and CPR training is provided for those needing certification/recertification. Onsite housing may be available upon request. This position requires a drug screen and criminal background check before hiring.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach age-appropriate environmental lessons for campers; keeping safety and nature stewardship in mind for each lesson
  • Participate in offsite field trips that align with weekly themes and offer educational interpretation and behavior management assistance
  • Manage lesson materials and maintain organized learning spaces
  • Bring enthusiasm and positivity to outdoor activities, adapting to weather conditions accordingly
  • Support camp staff in educational efforts by being a resource for environmental topics
  • Foster strong relationships with campers, leadership team, and colleagues

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in environmental education, teaching, or a related EE field
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills for engaging diverse groups of children
  • Proven experience working with children in various settings, preferably in groups of 10+
  • Passion for nature and outdoor education, with solid knowledge of the local environments flora and fauna
  • Physical stamina for outdoor work in all weather conditions and ability to be active throughout day-to-day responsibilities; emotional resilience and social skills to connect with campers and staff
  • Demonstrate commitment, reliability, punctuality, and responsibility
