Job description

The Town of Brookline Recreation Department is seeking qualified, energetic, and compassionate candidates for full-time seasonal positions for Nature Camp in Summer 2026. Nature Camp programs will run from June 29, 2026 to August 21, 2026 at two locations in Brookline, MA. Counselors and Directors are required to attend mandatory training dates from June 22, 2026 to June 26, 2026. Some pre-training assignments will be required. All candidates will go through a background check through the Criminal and Sexual offender (CORI/SORI) database.
Counselor positions are hired for either a 6-week session from June 22 until July 31, or a 9-week session from June 22 until August 21.
Responsibilities:
  • Ensure effective group management and group safety during camp day
  • Assist Nature Camp Director in leading nature education lessons
  • Assist Nature Camp Director with implementation of camp rules and regulations
  • Assist in facilitating extended day program for up to five weeks as needed
  • Inventory and clean all instructional materials and resources, including classroom space and vehicles used for camper transportation
  • Foster a positive, welcoming, inclusive, supportive environment for all campers
  • Maintain positive, effective communication with campers' caregivers as needed
  • Transport campers to daily field trips in Brookline and beyond by operating 12-passenger van or 15-passenger minibus
  • Assist Nature Camp Director with administering First Aid as needed or required
  • Perform similar or related work as directed, required, or as situations dictate

Supervision:
Nature Camp Counselors report directly to their site's Nature Camp Director, who reports to Brookline Recreation's Environmental Educator.
Qualifications:
  • Must be 16 years or older
  • Commitment to June and July trainings and camp schedule in July and August required, according to assignment to either 5-week or 8-week session
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid required; able to certify during mandatory training
  • Driver's License strongly preferred; no CDL required
  • Coursework or real-world experience in education, psychology, social work, hiking, ecology, biology, wildlife, and plant sciences preferred
  • Previous camp counselor experience preferred
  • Childcare experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills required; ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with others, verbally and in writing, including co-workers, children, and adults
  • Organized, reliable, and conscientious
  • Able to work independently, proactively, and as part of a team
  • Ability to act professionally, appropriately, and to maintain confidentiality of records and other information

Pay is $19.00 per hour. Applications accepted through April 30, 2026. Positions will be filled on a rolling basis until April 30, 2026.
Employment dependent on successful completion and clearing of CORI/SORI.
