Setup Mechanic II

Job Summary

The Setup Mechanic II is responsible for setting up, repairing, troubleshooting, and maintaining injection molding and fabrication equipment to support safe, efficient, and continuous production. This position independently performs machine setups, mold changes, equipment adjustments, preventive maintenance, and repairs while ensuring product quality and process stability. The role supports manufacturing operations by monitoring equipment performance, resolving mechanical issues, and collaborating with production, engineering, and Quality Assurance teams.

This is a 3rd shift position. Initial training will be conducted on 1st shift (7:00 AM – 3:00 PM) for approximately 3–4 weeks.

Job Duties

• Set up, align, install, and secure molds, dies, fixtures, tooling, and welding heads on injection molding and fabrication equipment.

• Perform machine startups, shutdowns, mold changes, and equipment changeovers following established procedures.

• Adjust machine controls, including temperature, pressure, timing, stroke, and process parameters, to ensure stable operation and consistent product quality.

• Connect and verify required utilities, including steam, oil, water, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other process lines.

• Load resins and other production materials into machine hoppers as required.

• Run sample production cycles, inspect parts, verify critical dimensions, and make process adjustments to meet quality specifications.

• Submit first article samples to Quality Assurance for approval before production.

• Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, automation, and process-related equipment issues.

• Disassemble, repair, replace, and reassemble defective machine components using hand and power tools.

• Perform preventive maintenance according to scheduled maintenance plans.

• Assist with equipment upgrades, complex repairs, and continuous improvement initiatives to improve equipment reliability and manufacturing efficiency.

• Monitor machine performance throughout production and respond to equipment issues to minimize downtime.

• Maintain accurate maintenance and equipment records using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and manufacturing software.

• Train and assist operators and junior technicians on equipment setup and proper operating procedures.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment following 5S and company standards.

• Occasionally load or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques or lifting assistance when required.

• May be required to temporarily support other shifts based on production needs.

• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and process-related equipment issues.

• Analyze machine performance and implement corrective actions to improve reliability.

• Apply basic mathematical concepts, including algebra and geometry, to machine setup, measurements, and troubleshooting.

• Read and interpret safety rules, technical manuals, blueprints, maintenance instructions, and operating procedures.

• Accurately complete maintenance documentation and reports.

• Communicate effectively with production personnel, engineering, maintenance, and Quality Assurance teams.

Skills & Technical Qualifications

• Experience with injection molding machine setup and troubleshooting.

• Knowledge of molding processes, tooling, and machine operation.

• Mechanical aptitude with experience repairing industrial manufacturing equipment.

• Working knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems.

• Experience with automation equipment, PLCs, HMIs, CNC controls, robotics, and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is preferred.

• Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and failure analysis.

• Computer proficiency with maintenance management software and manufacturing systems.

Knowledge

• Strong mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and safety knowledge.

• Experience in regulated manufacturing environments preferred.

• Knowledge of medical device manufacturing is a plus.

• Understanding of World-Class Manufacturing and Lean Manufacturing principles preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand throughout the work shift.

• Occasionally walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and use hands for repetitive tasks.

• Frequently use hand and power tools.

• Occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques or assistance when required.

• Must possess close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• Fitness for Duty examinations may be required when job-related and consistent with business necessity.

Education & Experience

Education

• High School Diploma or GED required.

• Associate degree or two-year technical certificate in Industrial Maintenance, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Technology, or a related field preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in industrial equipment maintenance, injection molding setup, or manufacturing equipment repair.

• Equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant experience will be considered.
