What Does a Summer Lifeguard Do?

The responsibilities of a summer lifeguard include working to ensure the safety of people at a swimming pool or those who swim at the beach during the summer season. As a summer lifeguard, your exact duties vary depending on the needs of your employer and where you work. In general, you monitor and enforce rules and regulations of the swimming area and perform rescue and first aid services when necessary. It’s your job to keep an eye on swimmers. Some lifeguards also have swim instructor duties. For example, you may provide swimming lessons to children and teach skills that ensure they use the swimming area safely.

Excellent communication, alertness, and teamwork are essential soft skills for effectively supervising swimmers and responding to emergencies. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety of patrons and preventing accidents in aquatic environments.

What are some common challenges summer lifeguards face and how can they effectively handle them?

Summer lifeguards often contend with crowded swimming areas, rapidly changing weather, and the need to maintain constant vigilance for long hours in the sun. Lifeguards can handle these demands by staying hydrated, rotating positions regularly to remain alert, and participating in frequent training drills to sharpen their emergency response skills.
