The Opportunity
We are seeking a Product Design Intern to lead the development and management of our design system. This role will focus on building scalable UI components, defining design tokens, and establishing patterns and governance to ensure consistency across our product. The intern will work closely with product managers and front-end engineers to bridge design and implementation, contributing directly to the quality and scalability of our product experience.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and build reusable UI components in Figma aligned with product requirements
  • Define and maintain design tokens (e.g., color, typography, spacing) to support consistency and scalability
  • Establish and document design patterns and usage guidelines for cross-team adoption
  • Collaborate with front-end engineers to align design components with implementation in Storybook
  • Contribute to the development and evolution of a centralized design system
  • Participate in product discussions, sprint planning, and design reviews
  • Support ongoing improvements to design-to-development workflows and handoff processes
Learning Outcomes:
  • Hands-on experience building and scaling a production design system
  • Exposure to real-world product development workflows, including collaboration with product and engineering teams
  • Experience working with industry tools such as Figma and Storybook
  • Development of systems thinking, component-based design, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field
  • Foundational experience with UI/UX design and component-based design systems
  • Familiarity with Figma; exposure to tools like Storybook or front-end concepts is an asset
  • Interest in design systems, scalable product design, and design-engineering collaboration
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn in a fast-paced product environment
$18 - $20 an hour
The Work Environment
Our location is downtown Toronto in a small office environment.  At the time of the posting, Univeris is working in a hybrid model, in the office three times a week.
