A Summer Engineer Internship is a temporary position typically offered to students or recent graduates in engineering fields to gain practical, hands-on experience during the summer months. Interns work under the supervision of experienced professionals on real-world projects, applying classroom knowledge to industry challenges. The internship helps students develop technical skills, build professional networks, and explore potential career paths within engineering. Many companies use summer internships as a way to identify talented individuals for future full-time roles.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a summer engineer internship?

As a Summer Engineer Intern, you'll typically be assigned to real-world engineering projects that align with your skills and the company's current needs. Projects may include assisting with product design, supporting testing and validation, working on process improvements, or helping develop prototypes. In addition to technical work, interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, participate in team meetings, and may present their findings to stakeholders. This hands-on experience helps interns gain a better understanding of the industry and develop practical skills applicable to their future careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Engineer Intern, you need a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and coursework in your specific discipline, typically supported by current enrollment in an accredited engineering program. PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:

VEHICLE

  • DRAGON : The Dragon spacecraft is capable of carrying up to 7 passengers to and from Earth orbit, and beyond. It is the only spacecraft currently flying that is capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth and is the first private spacecraft to take humans to the space station.
  • FALCON : The Falcon program tackles space exploration's toughest problems through the ongoing development of our reusable launch vehicles, Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. These vehicles are currently responsible for delivering commercial, national security, and NASA satellites into orbit, as well as supply critical science, supplies, and crew to the International Space Station.
  • STARSHIP: The Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket - collectively referred to as Starship - represent a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship is the world's most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, designed to carry more than 100 metric tonnes to orbit in a fully reusable configuration and powered by our Raptor and Raptor Vacuum (RVac) engines, which are designed for use in the vacuum of space.
