THE DEPARTMENT:
The W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center (AHC) is dedicated to promoting the legacy of the Kellogg Arabians by providing a venue where students and the public can learn more about the Arabian Horses. The AHC provides an environment where students can learn about the Arabian Horses and the horse industry, supports the learn-by doing educational mission of the University, and continues the tradition of breeding and raising high quality show horses.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative Communications:

• Communicate with Huntley College of Agriculture faculty and staff on activities related to classes/labs or research as required.
• Work effectively with student assistants and interact with the public and the Arabian Horse Industry in a professional and congenial manner.
• Assist with advancement work and fundraising initiatives as required. Perform duties which may involve interaction with college students, parents, alumni, and prospective students, requiring a degree of communication skills and professional decorum.
• Work with staff in the production of public exhibitions of the W. K. Kellogg Arabians.
• Analyze the needs of preparation and exhibition of horses in the center's monthly Sunday Shows ensuring a well-executed, informative, and entertaining program.
• Events on and off campus with or without horses to promote the W. K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center and the Arabian Horse Breed.
• Prepare and present horses to the President's Advisory Committee and the public.
• Assist with advancement work by soliciting stallion service donations and other fundraising initiatives as required.

Herd Care/Husbandry: 

• Perform daily physical and behavioral inspections of all horses; promptly report abnormalities or concerns to management
• Assist with and/or administer routine healthcare procedures including vaccinations, deworming, and basic treatments as directed
• Support veterinary care, including assisting with exams, castrations, and other medical procedures
• Coordinate and schedule farrier services; safely handle and hold horses for farrier care
• Maintain accurate health and treatment records for each horse
• Lead and assist in the safe movement of horses between barns, paddocks, and pastures
• Monitor pasture conditions to support equine nutrition, safety, and overall land stewardship
• Ensure compliance with university standards for animal care, facility appearance, and biosecurity protocols

Farm Operations:

• Assist staff on a day-to-day basis to meet the long-term and short-term goals of the KAHC
• Perform duties that may require knowledge of and experience with different types of farm machinery.
• Provide recommendations to the Executive Director on hiring of student assistants
• Provide instructional and research support as required, including assisting in instructional activities and helping faculty or students work independently with horses.
• As directed, assist with youth summer camp program. Bring issues, concerns, and recommendations regarding performance and operations to the Executive Director's attention.
• Work effectively and collegially with other employees, the Executive Director and students, and interact with the public and the Arabian Horse Industry in a professional and congenial manner.
• Support and implement University safety policies and procedures. Ensure IACUC policies are followed and assist with inspections as required.
• Communicate and coordinate with the Executive Director in a timely manner regarding the identification of health-related problems, medical treatment of horses, the sale of horses, movement of horses within the Horse Center, the transfer of horses to or from the property, the interstate and intrastate, and any related matters.

Horse/Grooming Activities

• Ensure horses are in healthy physical condition and safe to ride using current industry-accepted practices, or as otherwise directed.
• Assist other AHC staff with non-student horses as required, including movement of horses in pastures and performing herd health tasks which may include foals, yearlings, two-year-old and older horses. 
• Follow USDA and IACUC regulations in all horse activities and assist with inspections as required.
• Assist with veterinarian, farrier, breeding, and transporting of horses as needed. Serve on rotation basis as On Call for weekend and holiday horse related emergencies.
• Daily cleaning of stalls, and periodic stripping/re-bedding of stalls, as well as feeding and watering of horses in the barns and pastures.
• Blanket and un-blanket horses, depending on season
• Grooming of horses, including daily routine grooming, bathing, clipping and more specialized show grooming.
• Perform first aid and health maintenance duties on horses, such as daily leg care and maintenance duties involving bandaging tendons and hoof inspection.
• Perform duties involving feed additives/supplements and medicated feed supplements

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Combination - Equivalent to 60 semester or 90 quarter units of academic work at a four-year college or university with coursework in animal husbandry, livestock management, equine science, animal science, or a closely related field. Additional specialized experience demonstrating the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on the basis of one year of experience for each 30 semester or 45 quarter units of accredited college work completed.
• DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State
• Equivalent to one year of experience in the care, feeding, grooming, handling, or breeding of livestock, preferably horses or other large animals.
• General knowledge of modern livestock and equine feeding, breeding, grooming, handling, and health care practices. Working knowledge of stable operations, animal husbandry practices, and the safe use of livestock handling techniques and equipment. Ability to recognize signs of common equine illnesses, injuries, and behavioral changes and promptly report concerns to appropriate personnel. Ability to assist with routine animal health care procedures, veterinary and farrier activities, and horse transportation using established procedures. Ability to safely handle, groom, feed, blanket, and exercise horses while maintaining a safe environment for animals, students, staff, and visitors. Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on farm equipment, tractors, trailers, and other tools used in daily livestock operations. Ability to maintain accurate health, feeding, and operational records. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, veterinarians, farriers, and members of the public. Ability to provide task-based guidance to student assistants while performing assigned work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and follow established safety procedures, including university animal care and biosecurity protocols.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or its equivalent.
• Previous experience overseeing stable operations and prior experience working closely with horses are required.
• Work or courses in animal husbandry, horse management, and related animal science areas.
• Knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline.
• Knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.
• Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used in the care of horses.
• Ability to operate farm tractor and perform site maintenance as requested.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to work alongside student assistants, plan and develop priorities, and handle multiple tasks.

CSU Classification Salary Range
This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 9. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $4,090 and maximum $5,959 per month. University Driving Requirement
Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver's license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3.
