Job description

Reports to: Lead Student Success Specialist for the College of Science and Engineering

Status: Non-exempt

Direct Reports: None

Job Purpose:

The Student Success Specialist (SSS) for the College of Science and Engineering is responsible for holistically supporting STEM students, including intervening with academically at-risk students, providing career fair and faculty advising support, and academically advising a cohort of students.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Academically advises all students in assigned College of Science and Engineering cohort
  • Provides holistic support for students in COSE through one-on-one coaching
  • Promotes and engages with career fairs and career development for specific academic unit
  • Administers faculty advising training for the College of Science and Engineering
  • Serves as science advising knowledge resource for faculty advisors
  • Performs interventions, tracks, and creates maps to success for academically at-risk students in cohort
  • Builds awareness of university-based services (e.g. advising, career services, campus recreation, student organizations, tutoring) to promote holistic student development
  • Assists the Lead SSS for the College of Science and Engineering in developing and implementing retention and early intervention programs for students
  • Participates and leads in planning and implementation of the Summer Launch program, including active involvement during the week of the program
  • Represents department and academically advises at Pre-Registration and orientation events
  • Supports on campus events for the College of Science and Engineering
  • Aids in social, academic, and spiritual integration to support student engagement and success
  • Contributes to students discipleship and spiritual growth as key component of student success and development
  • Performs other duties as assigned by direct supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

  • Commitment to the ministry and mission of Houston Christian University
  • Ability and willingness to disciple students and foster spiritual growth
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university (preferably in a field of study within their assigned academic unit)

Expectations

In addition to the above job responsibilities, some weekends or evenings may be required on a limited basis.
