Job description

Job Title: Tool MakerJob Description

We are seeking a skilled Tool Maker/Machinist to construct precision tools and tooling components to enable efficient manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities
  • Study specifications such as blueprints, models, sketches, or tool descriptions to plan the sequence of operations.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe or program metal stock to lay out workpieces for machining.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to machine parts to specifications, verifying conformance of machined parts.
  • Position and secure parts on surface plates or worktables using devices such as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates.
  • Fit and assemble parts into assemblies or mechanisms using hand tools.
  • Verify dimensions and alignment using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
  • Examine standard tools and modify tools as required.
  • Develop specifications from general descriptions and draw or sketch tools to be fabricated.
  • Train workers in the setup and operation of machine tools.
  • Heat treat tools or parts as necessary.
  • Communicate with co-workers and supervisors to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
  • Inspect and measure parts, adhering to corporate philosophies and procedures.
  • Seek improvements in all aspects of manufacturing and seek support from supervisors when overburdened.
Essential Skills
  • Tool and die making experience.
  • Experience with mill and lathe operations.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Hands-on experience with CAM programming and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to interpret schematics and shop math calculations.
  • Five or more years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with maintenance of machines and tools.
  • Ability to work with engineers to fabricate and implement changes in designs.
  • Capability to teach and delegate work to apprentice toolmakers.
  • Coordination of purchasing stock and components.
