Job description

JOB TITLE: Substation Civil Design Engineer
REQUISITION: TRA00ZL

LOCATION: Topeka, KS 
PAY RANGE:
Engineer I: $68,500 - $85,600 - $102,700
Engineer II: $83,600 - $104,500 - $125,400
Staff Engineer: $93,400 - $116,800 - $140,200
Sr Engineer: $94,600 - $126,100 - $157,600
Lead Engineer: $111,400 - $148,500 - $185,600

Scheduled Work Hours:  Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Other hours as required)

Position Overview:
Under the direction of substation civil management, performs detailed design functions and various technical tasks relating to the company's electrical substation system.  Works closely with other Transmission & Substation groups, Electric Distribution Engineering, System Planning, Real Estate Services, and Marketing in assisting with a wide variety of technical issues.  Initial duties will include familiarization with the engineering documents and drawings.  

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 
    Perform various technical studies by collecting, analyzing and verifying data using software to ensure reliability, safety, and compliance with regulations and Company Standards.
    Perform design relating to the Company's electric substation equipment (eg. Structures, foundations, and fences) using engineering principles or software to ensure reliability and safety.  
    Design substation systems (eg. Bus, site design and drainage, landscaping) using engineering principles or software to ensure reliability and safety.  
    Specify substation material and labor (eg. Concrete, steel, earthwork, erosion control, fencing, and landscaping) to ensure reliability and safety.  
    Gather and analyze data (eg. Geotechnical, structural load, topographic, weather, property, codes and regulations) through research for use in design calculations.  
    Produce detailed substation project scopes and cost estimates to assist in multi-year projects and budget planning by using data from previous projects, bids, and research in order to ensure accuracy and completion of tasks on time and on budget.
    Support both operations and construction personnel as needed in troubleshooting, failure analysis, mis-operations, testing assistance, commissioning assistance and other technical duties by analyzing data and providing findings in order to resolve problems as they arise (e.g., construction issues, erosion maintenance, steel modifications, drawing errors, property rights).
    Prepare and study technical drawings and specifications to ensure that installation and operations conform to requirements (e.g., Company, protection, code).
    Create alternative system designs by utilizing engineering principles, knowledge and experience in order to improve system performance.
    Select and design sites for new substations by taking input from several Company departments and outside agencies, and working with internal/external customers to meet system needs. 
    Manage and direct staff members, contractors, and consultants who are extensions of the department in order to support company projects.  
    Visit project sites to monitor progress and ensure compliance with regulations and Company standards. 

Education and Experience Requirements:     
Requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering (preferably civil) from an ABET accredited program as a minimum.  The preferred candidate will have utility experience directly related to electric substation, generation, and transmission.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
Successful candidate requires knowledge of basic engineering principles and advanced mathematics.  Requires knowledge of and skills in civil and structural engineering.  Requires extensive knowledge of geotechnical properties and testing procedures.  Requires the ability to learn major systems in a timely fashion.  Must be familiar with governing codes and regulations.  Must be competent in general computer skills with a working knowledge of database, spreadsheet, and word processing applications.  Requires knowledge of business environments and understanding of common business procedures.  Must exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
Scope includes the ability to develop professional work including detail design of various substation related projects.  Specific roles include development of bid quality construction packages and scopes of work.  Must have knowledge and abilities enabling the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks.  Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.  

Licenses, Certification, Bonding and/or Testing Required:
Valid driver's license required.  Professional Engineering registration is desirable but not required.

Working Conditions:
Conditions will vary from office to field environments.  Must be able to work additional hours on short notice.  Some travel may be required.  Must have satisfactory work record including good attendance.
