Sub Welder information

What is a sub welder?

Sub Welders, also known as underwater welders, are skilled professionals who perform welding tasks below the surface of water. They typically work on the construction, maintenance, and repair of marine structures such as ships, oil rigs, pipelines, and dams. This job requires specialized training in both commercial diving and welding, as well as knowledge of safety protocols due to the challenging and hazardous underwater environment. Sub Welders use a variety of welding techniques, including wet and dry welding, depending on the project requirements.

What are some unique challenges faced by sub welders working underwater compared to traditional welders?

Sub Welders, or underwater welders, often work in challenging and hazardous environments where visibility, temperature, and water pressure can greatly affect the welding process. Unlike traditional welding, they must contend with limited mobility due to diving equipment and the need to maintain safety protocols for both welding and diving. Communication with surface teams is also more complex, requiring clear coordination and teamwork. These factors demand strong technical skills, adaptability, and a commitment to safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sub welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sub Welder, you need expertise in underwater welding techniques, strong physical fitness, and a commercial diving certification. Familiarity with specialized welding equipment, underwater cutting tools, and safety systems is essential, often supported by certifications like AWS D3.6M or ADCI. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and the ability to work well under pressure are crucial soft skills in this challenging environment. These competencies ensure safety, precision, and reliability when performing critical underwater repairs and construction.

How to become a submarine welder?

To become a submarine welder, you typically need to complete a welding training program, obtain certifications such as AWS or ASME, and gain experience in underwater or marine welding environments. Specialized skills in underwater welding techniques and safety procedures are essential for this role.

Job description

Job Title: Welder and FabricatorJob Description

We are seeking a skilled Welder and Fabricator to join a clean, well-organized machine and fabrication shop. In this role, you will take pre-fabricated pieces and weld them into sub-assemblies that are ready for painting. These sub-assemblies range from standard items, welded with the help of fixtures and jigs, to unique products built directly from prints. You will set up and operate a MIG welder, read and interpret blueprints, and fabricate components efficiently and accurately.

Responsibilities
  • Receive project assignments and project packages containing prints and pre-fabricated parts needed to weld sub-assemblies.
  • Review and interpret blueprints and project documentation to understand weld and fabrication requirements.
  • Cut large sheets, plates, or structural pieces to size using an acetylene torch and then grind cut edges with a hand-held electric grinder.
  • Pull standard parts from inventory within the plant as needed to complete each sub-assembly.
  • Place weldments on horses for welding, ensuring proper support and positioning.
  • Clamp pieces together, check their position and squareness, and perform spot welds to hold components in place.
  • Reconfirm the position and squareness of parts, grinding off welds and repositioning components when necessary to achieve correct alignment.
  • Position, tack, and fit pieces together into final sub-assemblies and complete finished welding according to specifications.
  • Spend significant time grinding edges and welds on exposed surfaces to achieve smooth, high-quality finishes.
  • Use overhead cranes or forklifts as needed to lift and position large sub-assemblies safely on horses.
  • Prepare completed sub-assemblies so they are ready for painting and further processing.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all shop safety procedures and guidelines.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on experience with MIG welding in a fabrication or shop environment.
  • Strong fabrication skills, including fitting, tacking, and assembling metal components.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols accurately.
  • Proficiency in grinding welds and edges to achieve smooth, finished surfaces.
  • Ability to follow detailed project instructions and work packages from start to completion.
  • Capability to safely handle and position metal components on horses for welding.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience using an acetylene torch to cut large sheets, plates, or structural materials.
  • Proficiency with hand-held electric grinders for edge preparation and finishing.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts to lift and position large sub-assemblies.
  • Comfort working from fixtures and jigs as well as directly from prints for unique weld-from-print products.
  • Ability to work a structured 1st shift schedule with four 10-hour days.
Why Work Here?

You will join a very clean, well-maintained fabrication environment with a strong, supportive culture in the welding department. The team is stable and experienced, with an average employee tenure of around 15 years on the floor, reflecting long-term opportunities and a workplace where people choose to stay. You can enjoy working in a growing organization that values quality, craftsmanship, and a positive shop atmosphere.

Work Environment

The role is based in a very clean machine and fabrication shop that emphasizes organization, safety, and quality. You will work on 1st shift only, following a schedule of four 10-hour shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch and two 15-minute breaks. Work involves regular use of MIG welders, acetylene torches, hand-held electric grinders, horses for positioning weldments, and occasional use of overhead cranes and forklifts for large sub-assemblies. The environment is production-oriented yet clean and orderly, supporting focused fabrication and welding work throughout the shift.
