In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Miami "America's Cleanest City", for its year-round good air quality, vast green spaces, clean drinking water, clean streets and city-wide recycling programs. According to a 2009 Banking study of 73 world cities, Miami was ranked as the richest city in the United States, and the world's fifth-richest city in terms of purchasing power. Miami is nicknamed the "Capital of Latin America", is the second largest U.S. city with a Spanish-speaking majority, and the largest city with a Cuban-American plurality. Downtown Miami is home to the largest concentration of international banks in the United States, and many large national and international companies. The Civic Center is a major center for hospitals, research institutes, medical centers, and biotechnology industries. For more than two decades, the Port of Miami, known as the "Cruise Capital of the World," has been the number one cruise passenger port in the world. It accommodates some of the world's largest cruise ships and operations, and is the busiest port in both passenger traffic and cruise lines.

Schedule

These services will be required five (5) days per week, normally consisting of six (6), one (1) hour sessions per day, Monday through Friday (except Federal holidays), normally between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with a 30 minute unpaid lunch period, (if applicable). The facility is expected to require an average of 30 sessions per week.

Requirements (Duties include but are not limited)

  • Reading and interpreting prescriptions and medication orders written by medical staff, selection and retrieval of medications of correct strength and dosage form prescribed, transcribing prescription data to labels using typewriters or via computer system, preparing prescriptions for review by a Pharmacist or Physician prior to dispensing, and giving pertinent patient instructions when appropriate. The pharmacy technician will not fill, issue and/or deal in any way with DEA controlled substances but can be responsible for the running of pill lines upon proper orientation by the Chief Pharmacist.
  • Assist the Pharmacist in ensuring that only medications listed in the approved Bureau of Prisons Formulary are dispensed and will ensure that requests for Non-Formulary Medications are initiated and submitted to the BOP Chief Pharmacist for approval.
  • Must be proficient in maintaining adequate inventories of all medications and medical supplies and preparing the proper paperwork for replenishment of inventory, as well as performing an expiration date check ensure that no outdated or expired stock remains in the inventory.
  • Assist in updating patient education literature, assisting in improvement of performance studies and also assist the Pharmacist in meeting policy guidelines for the inmates.
  • Prepare recommended supply lists to order pharmaceuticals, maintain the pharmacy areas in a clean and orderly fashion, maintain stock of appropriate forms utilized in the pharmacy department, file pharmacy records/files and information, and shall in the absence of the pharmacist maintain the Pharmacy Operation, but they must have the Medical Officer review all prescriptions filled prior to dispensing. The Pharmacy Technician should be able to accurately input a minimum of 25 prescriptions per hour.
  • Periodically, Assist with clerical duties including making copies, scans, and electronically attaches medical files to electronic medical records; file loose reports into pre-designated positions of the medical records; audit reports for missing signatures, inmate registration number, and institution name; pull and file medical records for appropriate clinicians; and in the absence of staff, will answer the phone and take messages.

Qualifications

  • Must be certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (NPTC).
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years' experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • College level training and/or past correctional experience is desirable, but not required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) as approved by the American Heart Association (AHA).
