Job description

Why Roblox Studio?

Roblox Studio is the creation engine behind millions of immersive 3D experiences built by creators around the world. It serves everyone from first-time developers to large professional studios, combining a powerful real-time engine with a deeply expressive toolchain.

As creation on Roblox grows more sophisticated, Studio must continue evolving as a world-class development environment for interactive 3D experiences. That requires deep investment in the technical systems that underpin the IDE experience from scripting, debugging, architecture, and core IDE capabilities including performance.

We are looking for a leader who can raise the bar on these foundational systems and help shape the future of Studio as a high-quality, extensible, and performant creation environment. Familiarity with creator tools is important, and experience with AI-assisted creation is a plus.

The Role

We are seeking a Director of Engineering for Studio Systems to lead a critical area of Roblox Studio's technical foundation.

In this role, you will be accountable for the architecture, execution, and long-term evolution of core systems that power Studio's IDE and developer workflows. This includes areas such as scripting, debugging, toolchain, and core architecture that are central to making Studio powerful, reliable, and scalable for creators.

This role requires deep technical leadership, strong engineering judgment, and the ability to lead through complex architectural and organizational challenges. The ideal candidate brings strong experience in developer tools or IDE-like environments, and is comfortable leading teams working in large-scale C++ codebases.

This role will be based in our San Mateo, CA headquarters (hybrid with Tues-Thurs onsite days).

You Will:
  • Own the technical direction and delivery of major investments across Studio's core systems.
  • Lead teams working on foundational areas such as scripting, debugging, toolchain, architecture, and related developer workflows.
  • Set and uphold a high engineering quality bar for performance, reliability, maintainability, and extensibility.
  • Lead senior engineers and managers across multiple teams.
  • Drive alignment and execution across Studio, Engine, Product, Design, Infrastructure, and related partner teams.
  • Partner with executive leadership to translate long-term technical strategy into durable roadmaps and organizational plans.
  • Help shape Studio into a best-in-class development environment for both emerging creators and professional developers.
  • Contribute to the future direction of AI-assisted creation workflows where they intersect with Studio's core systems and developer experience.
You Have:
  • 15+ years of engineering experience, including leadership of large-scale and long-lived technical systems.
  • Proven leadership through major architectural, tooling, or platform transitions.
  • Strong experience building developer tools, IDEs, editor technologies, or other sophisticated technical products.
  • Deep technical background in systems engineering, including substantial experience with C++.
  • Familiarity with creator tools and workflows, especially in game development, 3D creation, or interactive development environments.
  • Track record of delivering reliable, high-quality systems in complex production environments.
  • Strong technical judgment and the ability to communicate effectively at both deep technical and executive levels.
  • Experience with AI-assisted creation, intelligent tooling, or LLM-powered workflows is a plus.
