Job description

The Web Specialist serves as the primary architect of the "human-facing" digital experience for the University of Memphis. This role bridges the gap between technical execution and creative storytelling, designing visually compelling layouts, maintaining a consistent brand voice, and ensuring industry-leading accessibility. Your goal is to ensure memphis.edu is functional, aesthetically intuitive, and persuasive to prospective and current students.

The University of Memphis is a leading, student-centered, urban public R1 research institution. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, on 1,160 acres. The University serves a population of nearly 20,000 students and 2,500 employees, including more than 1,000 full-time faculty members. The University offers bachelor's degrees in more than 230 areas of study, master's degrees in more than 50 subjects and doctoral degrees in 26 disciplines; supported an institutional record of more than $100 million in research awards for FY24; and has an operating budget of close to $500 million.

Bachelor's degree in web design, Communications, Marketing, or a related field (equivalent professional experience/portfolios will also be considered). Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

Skills: Basic knowledge and understanding of HTML, CSS and Google Analytics.

Web Design & User Experience (UI/UX)
Designs, updates, and maintains landing pages, academic program pages, and other web content within the Modern Campus CMS. Applies user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) best practices to support intuitive navigation, usability, engagement, and a consistent digital experience across University websites.

Web Content & Copywriting
Develops, edits, and optimizes web content to ensure clarity, accuracy, consistency, and alignment with University brand and communication standards. Creates and refines digital microcopy, including buttons, labels, forms, calls to action, and other user-facing content, to support a clear and seamless user journey.

Search Optimization & Digital Discoverability
Implements search engine optimization (SEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), and generative engine optimization (GEO) best practices to improve the visibility and discoverability of University web content across traditional search engines and emerging AI-driven search platforms. Applies appropriate page structure, metadata, content organization, and other optimization techniques.

Web Analytics & Performance Optimization
Monitors and evaluates website performance, user engagement, search visibility, and other relevant web metrics. Uses available analytics and performance data to identify trends, recommend improvements, and optimize web content and user experiences.

Digital Asset Management
Sources, prepares, organizes, and optimizes images, videos, and other digital assets for web use. Ensures digital assets maintain appropriate visual quality while supporting website performance, accessibility, and page-load efficiency.

Brand Standards & Quality Assurance
Ensures web content and digital assets comply with established University brand standards, including typography, color palettes, imagery, visual styles, and other digital identity guidelines. Provides guidance to campus partners regarding the appropriate application of web and brand standards and identifies content that may require correction or improvement.

Digital Accessibility
Reviews and audits web pages and digital content for compliance with applicable accessibility standards and University requirements, including Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Identifies and addresses accessibility concerns related to color contrast, alternative text, logical heading structures, keyboard navigation, screen-reader compatibility, and other accessibility considerations.

Collaboration & Web Support
Collaborates with University departments, academic units, marketing and communications staff, and other campus partners to support web content needs and digital initiatives. Provides guidance and assistance related to CMS functionality, web content standards, accessibility, branding, and web best practices.

Other Duties
Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the University's web presence, digital communications, and strategic priorities.
