Special Education Instructional Assistant-Job Description
Reports To:
Director of Student Services, Building Principal and Special Education Teacher of Record (TOR)
Job Summary:
The Special Education Instructional Assistant provides support to students with disabilities under the direction of the Teacher of Record. The assistant works with individual students or small groups, helps implement accommodations and modifications, and supports the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students in a variety of settings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the implementation of instructional plans developed by the Teacher of Record.
- Support students in general education and special education classrooms by reinforcing skills, reteaching concepts, and monitoring progress.
- Assist with the implementation of behavior intervention plans, functional routines, and social skills instruction.
- Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-classroom settings as assigned.
- Provide accommodations and modifications as directed, including scribing, read-alouds, and use of assistive technology.
- Collect and record data on student performance and behavior as directed by the TOR.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and information.
- Assist with personal care needs of students when necessary (e.g., toileting, feeding, mobility support).
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and related service providers to support student success.
- Participate in training and professional development provided by Lewis Cass Schools.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or special education staff.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate's degree, 48 college credit hours, or successful completion of the ParaPro exam preferred.
- Prior experience working with children, particularly those with disabilities, is preferred.
- Ability to take direction, follow instructional plans, and adapt to student needs.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Patience, flexibility, and commitment to student growth and development.
Work Environment:
- Position may require supporting students in both general education and special education settings.
- Duties may include assisting with lifting, mobility, or personal care.
- Position follows the school calendar with additional hours as assigned.
