Position Specific Summary
This combined role encompasses responsibilities from both the Food Service Worker/Cashier and Food Service Utility positions. The Dining and Retail Campus Worker performs cashiering duties, general food service work, and maintains sanitation standards in the preparation, service, and dining room facilities. The role also maintains kitchen work areas, equipment, and utensils in clean and orderly condition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Food Service Worker/Cashier
  • Prep work including washing, peeling, cutting, and seeding vegetables and fruits along with weighing and measuring designated ingredients.
  • Carries pans, kettles, and trays of food to and from workstations, stoves, and refrigerators while maintaining all safety standards. Distributes supplies, utensils, and portable equipment.
  • Properly stores foods in designated areas following wrapping, dating, and food safety and rotation procedures.
  • Cleans work areas, equipment and utensils. Assures compliance with all sanitation and safety requirements.
  • Utilizes approved food recipes and production standards to ensure proper quality, serving temperatures and standard portion control.
  • Serves customers in an efficient and friendly manner following outlined steps of service.
  • Interact with customers and resolve customer complaints in a friendly and service-oriented manner. Relays relevant information to the supervisor.
  • Performs sales transactions in a reasonable and timely fashion. Carefully enters all sales into the cash register to ensure that all purchases are accurately recorded.
  • Makes change, accepts declining balance cards, and other acceptable forms of payment, and issues of receipts to customers. Follows standard procedures for issuing cash refunds.
  • Responsible for all assigned change funds and cash receipts, ensuring that cash drawers are in compliance with overage/shortage standards.
  • Observe customer purchases in the cafe line and differentiate between standard portions.
  • Replenish condiments, beverages, and general supplies while maintaining the cleanliness of service areas.
  • Sweeps and mops floors at appropriate intervals to ensure compliance with safety and sanitation standards.
  • Washes worktables, walls, refrigerators, and meat blocks and all other food prep surfaces as assigned.
  • Sort and remove trash and garbage and place them in designated containers. Steam-cleans or hoses out garbage cans in assigned and appropriate areas.
  • Transfers supplies and equipment between storage and work areas, observing all safe lifting standards.
Standard Position Description
  • The student supports the daily operations of campus dining facilities by providing advanced food service, customer service, food safety, and operational compliance support. 
  • Duties may include: preparing and serving food, maintaining food safety and sanitation standards, assisting with inventory and retail operations, and independently conducting operational audits to ensure compliance with university and regulatory requirements. Students may also monitor dining operations during evenings and weekends, complete required documentation and reports, identify operational concerns, and communicate findings to professional staff. Special projects or duties may be assigned based on departmental operational needs. 

Professional Outcomes Critical Thinking, Teamwork, Professionalism Required Qualifications
This position requires advanced training and the ability to work independently with general supervision. Students must successfully complete all required departmental professional training and licenses, which may include  food preparation procedures, FARE Allergen Training, and ServSafe Food Handler Certification (or equivalent required certification) during onboarding. Students must demonstrate strong judgment, professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to consistently follow food safety, sanitation, and operational procedures. The position also requires the ability to meet the physical demands of a fast-paced dining environment. 
Preferred Qualifications
1-6 months of related food service experience and/or training.
