ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

SUMMARY: Currently recruiting a Part-Time Undergraduate Student Research Assistants to work in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. We are seeking a motivated student to join our research lab for summer studies focused on thin-film fabrication and optical characterization.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety): As a part-time Undergraduate Student Research Assistant, you will:

  • Fabricate thing films using the spin coating method
  • Prepare solutions and optimize coating parameters such as spin speed, coating time, and annealing conditions.
  • Characterize thin films using UV-Vis spectroscopy
  • Analyze optical spectra to determine properties such as band gap, optical conductivity, optical dielectric constant, refractive index, and extinction coefficient.
  • Maintain organized lab records and document experimental results
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures and maintain a clean workspace
  • Assist with data analysis, research discussions, and preparation of reports of presentations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a Cal Poly student pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Physics
  • Excellent English verbal communication and writing skills
  • Responsible and dependable
  • Ability to work well with various people including students, faculty, staff and administrators
  • Motivated, innovative and shows initiative

PREFERRED

  • Applicants with a background in physics
  • Experience with analyzing optical properties of thin films, such as band gap, optical dielectric constant, optical conductivity, and related parameters.
  • Basic laboratory skills, attention to detail, and an interest in thin films and optical materials are desirable.
