Job Summary
LEARN is TAMIU's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a campus-wide initiative focusing on experiential learning. Through this Student Research Assistant position, students will engage in hands-on learning by working under the guidance of a faculty mentor. They will aid faculty in their research projects while developing critical thinking and research skills.
Student research assistants will enhance their professional and personal development while working on projects that have both academic and social impact. Their role is to assist a faculty member in carrying out the faculty's particular research project and support their work through quantitative and qualitative research and analysis, performing literature reviews, assisting with surveys, and other research tasks.
Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Perform academic research under the direction of a faculty member.
  • Assist with data collection (surveys, key informant interviews, focus groups) and literature reviews;
  • Perform data entry, data cleaning, and quality assurance tasks;
  • Assist with basic quantitative and qualitative analysis;
  • Prepare charts and tables;
  • Present their research experience at the LEARN Expo.
  • Submit semester progress reports, surveys, and attend select workshops.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be an undergraduate student.
  • Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester.
  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students.
  • Must meet all other requirements stated in TAMIU's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).
  • Recommendation letter from the faculty mentor with whom the student will be working. Letter must include the following information:
    • Description of faculty research project
    • Description of student research assistant's contributions to project/list of tasks
    • Student research assistant learning outcome or skill development as a result of working on this faculty-led project.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computer workstations with common software applications.
  • Ability to organize and multitask functions to ensure compliance with deadlines.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationships and communication skills.
  • Problem analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn and use multiple software programs.

Other Requirements
  • Position requires on-campus, face-to-face interactions.
  • Position requires maintaining a regular attendance schedule on campus and in the workplace.
  • Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with the class schedule.
  • Promptly complete all required training.
  • Submit time sheet biweekly.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Position is subject to 15 weeks.
  • Progress reports and surveys must be completed.
  • Presentation at the LEARN Expo is required.

Pay of Rate: $12.50/hour for up to 15 hours weekly for 10-15 weeks
