Position Summary
The Dean of Students supports a safe, inclusive, and student-centered school environment by leading proactive behavior systems, coordinating student supports, and partnering closely with administrators, staff, families, and community agencies. This role focuses on student belonging, restorative practices, attendance, and the day-to-day student experience
Qualifications
• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or ability to obtain appropriate approval.
• Demonstrated experience working with adolescents in educational settings.
• Strong understanding of restorative practices, trauma-informed approaches, and positive behavior systems.
• Excellent communication, relationship building, and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to maintain composure, fairness, and professionalism in high stress situations.
• Prior experience in student management, counseling, or leadership roles.
• Experience with MTSS, PBIS, and data-driven decision-making.

Student Behavior Support & Intervention

• Maintain consistent, equitable application of the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.
*Support teachers with classroom management strategies and student behavior plans.
• Support conflict resolution and mediation among students.
• Coordinate re-entry meetings following suspensions or extended absences.
• Actively monitor hallways, common areas, and transition times to ensure student safety, accountability, and compliance with school expectations.
• Collect, analyze, and communicate student attendance, tardy, and behavioral data to guide intervention planning and continuous improvement efforts.
• Collaborate with staff to develop and maintain consistent procedures related to student supervision, hallway expectations, and accountability systems.
• Develop and oversee systems to reduce student tardiness through proactive interventions, accountability measures, and staff collaboration.
• Oversee student movement systems, including digital hall pass platforms, and monitor data to address misuse, avoidance behaviors, and accountability concerns.
Attendance, Engagement & Student Support
• Oversee attendance systems, including early intervention, parent communication, and truancy prevention.

Our district includes one Title I elementary school (K-5), the region's largest Title I middle school (grades 6-8), and the largest high school (grades 9-12) attached to a Career Center serving students in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. New teachers receive strong mentorship and guidance, with efforts to qualify them for tuition or loan forgiveness.
Sault Area Schools is a leader in computer-aided instruction, with all classrooms equipped with instructional technology. The Career Center integrates technology into many career and technical programs, including business services and drafting and design with industry-standard CAD-CAM software. Students can choose from 13 in-house career-technical programs or additional off-campus specializations.
