ABOUT SUSTAIN SU
Sustain SU is the University of Alberta Students' Union's arm of sustainability. We strive to give students an opportunity to gain and work on leadership skills, while also providing them a chance to dip their toes into the world of sustainability. We provide a diverse range of services and opportunities for involvement to the campus community. Our programs during the school year include a sustainable makers market (Green For Good Market), a Bike Library & Workshop, an outreach team, an events team, and our campus thrift store (SUBsprout).
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Sustain SU for the Fall and Winter! We are currently recruiting junior volunteers (called Eco Ambassadors) for the Special Events Team, SUBsprout Thrift Store Team, and the Sustainable Outreach Team (formerly called Sustainable Actions Team) and the Bike Library and Workshop Team. The deadline to apply will be September 11th 2026 at 9 AM.
ECO AMBASSADOR POSITION SUMMARY
Broadly speaking these volunteers can expect to commit ~3 - 5 hours per week (with slight variations depending on the team), Mid September 2026 until late April 2027. In this position you'll assist the senior volunteers in the running of your team. This may mean learning how to repair bikes (Bike Library and Workshop), writing blogs and creating a newsletter (Outreach Team), planning sustainability minded events for both internal Sustain SU and external community members (Events) or helping run our on campus Thrift Store, SUBsprout!
THE TEAMS
- Sustainable Outreach Team (SOT) (formerly Sustainable Actions Team)
- These 10 junior volunteers help market Sustain SU and teach campus about Sustainability, this might include tabling fairs, poster campaigns, managing our monthly newsletter, and producing blog posts. This is a medium commitment team. You can expect to meet with senior volunteers on a biweekly basis with plenty of at-home work.

- Special Events Team (SET)
- These volunteers help plan both internal and external events designed to engage the campus community in sustainability. There is flexibility in the types of events they run but previous examples include a Wildfire panel, a Sustainable Research Night, and a Sustainability Case Competition. This team also plans out volunteer appreciation events for our team of roughly 80 volunteers. This team requires a high level of commitment and can expect to meet with Senior volunteers and staff for a minimum of 1 hour each week plus an additional several hours of work each week spent running team meetings and planning / organizing / preparing for events.

- SUBsprout Thrift Store Team
- These Eco-Ambassador volunteers will help run Sustain SU's on campus thrift store, SUBsprout! Volunteers can expect to assist on sorting shifts, spent sorting through our clothing donations as well as take on shift work during our weekly Sprout Ups. If you love thrifting, this is the team! This is a medium time commitment team with Eco Ambassadors expecting two 1-hour shifts per week on average, with a little more during peak times. Availability on Wednesdays and Thursdays is strongly preferred.
- Bike Library and Workshop Team
- These Volunteers help run our Bike Library and Workshop located in the South Academic Building. This is a fairly low commitment team as the Bike Library is not super busy in the winter months, but, you can expect to learn a lot about fixing bikes, riding bikes, and all things bike related! Eco Ambassadors can expect approximately one/two 1 hour shifts per week on location in the BLW!
EQUITY AND INCLUSION
The UASU's mission is to serve, engage, and represent students. To do that well we need an organization that is representative of the students we serve. We are committed to creating a diverse environment that fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment. We actively encourage applications from members of groups experiencing barriers to equity.
