Position Title: Pharmacy Technician Adjunct Instructor

FLSA: Non-Exempt

FT/PT: Part Time

Hours Per Week: 25 hours

Work Schedule: Single day lab, weekly

Position Salary Range: $44-50 hourly

Summary: The Pharmacy Technician Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction to students enrolled in the Pharmacy Technician program at Howard Community College. This role includes teaching classroom theory, facilitating hands-on pharmacy practice activities, and preparing students for national pharmacy technician certification and entry-level employment in retail, hospital, long-term care, mail-order, specialty, and ambulatory pharmacy settings. The instructor creates an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes student success, professionalism, medication safety, ethical practice, and competency in pharmacy operations.

Essential Role Responsibilities: Develop and deliver curriculum aligned with National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Pharmacy Technician certification standards, current pharmacy practice, and applicable state and federal regulations. Teach classroom and laboratory components, including pharmacology, pharmacy calculations, pharmacy law and ethics, medication safety, prescription processing, inventory management, and compounding principles. Utilize the learning management system (Canvas) to support in-person, online, and hybrid instruction. Prepare students for national pharmacy technician certification examinations and entry-level pharmacy practice. Assess student performance through examinations, assignments, simulations, skills demonstrations, and competency evaluations. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, progress, and certification readiness. Ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory, and program requirements related to pharmacy technician education. Collaborate with Workforce Development staff, faculty, and employer partners to enhance student learning and workforce outcomes. Provide academic advising, mentoring, and career readiness support to students pursuing pharmacy technician careers. Maintain current knowledge of pharmacy practice, emerging technologies, medication therapies, and certification requirements. Participate in curriculum review, program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement activities. Promote professional behavior, effective communication, patient confidentiality, and ethical decision-making among students.

Minimum Education Required

Experience Required: Current national pharmacy technician certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) required. Pharmacist (PharmD/RPh) credentials are preferred but not required. Must hold an active Maryland Board of Pharmacy Pharmacy Technician registration and maintain good standing throughout employment. Minimum of three (3) years of recent pharmacy practice experience in a retail, hospital, long-term care, specialty, mail-order, or ambulatory pharmacy setting. Demonstrated knowledge of prescription processing, pharmacy calculations, medication safety, pharmacy law, inventory management, and pharmacy operations. Prior teaching, training, preceptor, workforce development, or staff education experience preferred. Associate degree required; bachelor's degree in healthcare, education, science, or a related field preferred. Completion of, or willingness to complete, instructor training or educational methodology coursework. Strong verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency with instructional technology, Microsoft Office applications, and learning management systems. Demonstrated commitment to student success, workforce development, diversity, equity, inclusion, and excellence in healthcare education.
