Job description

Position Summary: The carpenter position’s main responsibilities are to construct, erect, install and repair structures according to job specifications. These duties may also include, but not limited to, working with wood, block, gypsum board, mechanical apparatuses, paint, and other materials. The position also may be asked to aid in the accomplishment of other tasks at the request of a Campus Enhancement Director or the VP of Campus Enhancement Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with all types of building materials, such as wood, steel, sheetrock, etc.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints for the job
  • Ability to use a variety of power tools and measuring devices
  • Ability to work in all facets of construction, from large industrial jobs to small handyman jobs
  • Ability to identify issues and concerns in and around facilities, and to be able to discern best course of action for repair
  • Be flexible in the ability to perform tasks outside the standard duties of a carpenter
  • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively with peers and management.
  • Ability to understand and utilize the work order system CES uses to assign, track, and detail work requests on campus
  • Documents work completed in each work order as required/relates to each work order
  • Show strong customer service skills when interacting with students, faculty and staff across campus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 80 pounds
  • Manual dexterity for using saws, hammers and many other tools
  • Frequent and long periods of standing, bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching
  • Works inside and outside in varying weather conditions, including exposure to extreme temperatures.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

This position is a full-time position in Campus Enhancement Services.  The Carpenter reports directly to the Director of Construction.

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.  Hours of work and task assignments may vary dependent upon situational factors, crisis management, and/or weather-related factors, and may require night(s), weekend(s), and holiday(s) response.

  • Prior experience in the carpentry field, Five years + experience preferred
  • Have a High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Technical training through an apprenticeship preferred
  • Exhibit good mechanical skills to handle equipment and tools to avoid causing injuries to self and/or others
  • Strong communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Understanding of building codes
