ABOUT THE STUDENTS' UNION


The University of Alberta Students' Union (UASU) is the official student-run organization for
undergraduates at the University of Alberta. We aim to improve the undergraduate student experience
through the services, events and spaces that we provide. We also advocate on behalf of students within
the university community, and to all levels of government.


ABOUT UASU GOVERNANCE


The UASU's Governance department supports various bodies, representatives and officers in their overall
fulfillment and execution of governance activities for the UASU and related student representative entities.
The department advises, educates, empowers and provides administrative support to the UASU
executive and senior leadership, Students' Council, various governance committees, the elections office,
student representative associations, the members and officers of these governance groups,
representative students-at-large, and other relevant entities.


OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION


The Student Governance and Legislative Assistant assists the Governance Department in providing a
range of administrative and legislative support to Students' Council and its committees.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing administrative support to Students' Council and its standing and ad hoc
    committees.
  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and updating bylaws and policies relevant to the governance of the
    Students' Union.
  • Assist in bringing to life the vision of student leaders, particularly for the Bylaw Committee, Policy
    Committee, and Council Administration Committee.
  • Develop and update training materials for Students' Council members, including materials for
    committee chairs and training on Roberts' Rules of Order.
  • Create updated versions of all Committee Manuals, ensuring they are clear, accurate, and
    accessible.
  • Play an active role in the development and implementation of First-Year Council.
  • Assist with on-going maintenance of Governance records which include, but is not limited to,
    department documentation, Google Drive management, datasheet creation and other materials,
    as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with the Governance Department to achieve specific goals and governance
    milestones.
  • Perform all duties with impartiality and with respect for the integrity of governance processes.
  • Provide backup for other Governance Department positions, as assigned.
  • Perform other work-related duties and projects as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS


  • Currently enrolled as a University of Alberta undergraduate student.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize between multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated interest in governance structures.
  • Ability to interact effectively with colleagues, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work in office and in a hybrid environment.


PREFERRED SKILLS


  • Familiarity with the operation of Apple products and Google applications.
  • Previous work or volunteer experience in any University or UASU governance.
  • Understanding of UASU governance structures and operations. Familiarity with Roberts' Rules of Order is considered an assets.


WORKING CONDITIONS


  • Number of hours worked per week may vary, with 15 hours per week expected
  • Willingness and ability to work varying hours as needed and based on class schedule, including
    some evenings and weekends
  • Work is primarily in-person on the University of Alberta campus. Hybrid work may be possible to
    accommodate.
