Job Responsibilities
Position Summary:
St. John Fisher University is seeking applications for the dual grant-funded position of Advisor for the TRIO Student Support Services Program (SSS) and the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP). This full-time, 10-month Advisor will assist maintaining the programs.
The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program is a United States Department of Education Title IV grant-funded program designed to increase retention and graduation rates of low-income, first-generation university students and students with disabilities, through an array of services and opportunities.
The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is a New York State funded program designed to increase the number of economically disadvantaged students and others who are pursuing professional licensure and careers in mathematics, science, technology and health-related fields.
The advisor of the dual programs will view students through an asset-based lens and provide support, motivation, and guidance in decision-making under the theoretical framework of hope-based action theory. The CSTEP/TRIO SSS Advisor will work closely with the Director to ensure that the program is producing high-quality services and support systems for the students served.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Conduct one-on-one advising sessions with CSTEP/TRIO students to address academic and personal concerns, create goals for student success, and maintain relevant records to student profiles and progress.
  • Assist students with financial aid concerns by partnering with the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of Student Accounts, and the Office of the Registrar to ensure students have completed all necessary paperwork and met all institutional and federal deadlines.
  • Create and facilitate workshops/experiences with the Director, on-campus partners and community-based partners; lead activities in a variety of topics including, but not limited to, academic, social, career, personal, financial, and cultural.
  • Listen to, motivate and encourage students through day-to-day interactions and discussions.
  • Proactively collaborate with university-wide departments, faculty, tutors, and academic support staff to advocate, identify, and meet the academic needs of TRIO SSS and CSTEP students. Work closely with the Director and campus partners in future projects and tasks to ensure accurate and efficient program evaluation and expansion.
  • Assist in chaperoning cultural development opportunities and graduate school visits.
  • Work collaboratively and supportively with the TRIO SSS/CSTEP Director and TRIO SSS Advisor.
  • Other assignments assigned by the TRIO SSS/CSTEP Director

Education / Experience
  • Master's degree required, preferably in education, counseling or social sciences
  • Preferred one year of experience working with CSTEP and TRIO SSS program students or experience as a student in one of the programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with undergraduate students both individually and in groups. Some experience working with academic youth programs, non-profits, or higher education with exposure to crisis-intervention and/or advocacy counseling is preferred.
  • Genuine interest in valuing TRIO SSS and CSTEP through an asset-based approach.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed.

Competencies / Skills
  • Computer literate in a student information system, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Internet, and Social Media.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be open-minded, non-judgmental, and able interact with and advise diverse groups
  • Must have an energetic, engaging, and positive personality and character with the ability to encourage students to participate in the programs.
