What is a structural fitter?

A structural fitter is a metal worker who produces building materials for construction projects, such as for tall buildings and container ships. Your duties and responsibilities include the layout and assembly of parts that make up a structure, and you may weld pieces or use other tools, such as jack bars, turnbuckles, pry bars, hammers, or grinders to ensure that the materials align perfectly. Sometimes you move the parts manually while for larger jobs you use cranes or other equipment to move pieces into place.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural fitter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Fitter, you need proficiency in blueprint reading, metal fabrication, welding, and a solid understanding of structural assembly, usually supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with industrial tools such as grinders, measuring devices, and welding machines, as well as relevant safety certifications, is vital. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective problem-solving are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise construction, adherence to safety standards, and efficient project completion in demanding industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by structural fitters on large construction projects?

Structural Fitters working on large construction projects often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex blueprints, coordinating with other trades to prevent scheduling conflicts, and ensuring precise alignment and fitting of structural components. The role can also involve working at heights or in confined spaces, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols. Effective communication with supervisors, welders, and crane operators is essential to successfully assemble and secure structural frameworks within project timelines.

What is the difference between Structural Fitter vs Mechanical Fitter?

Job description

Structural Steel Fitter - Blueprint, Layout & Fit-Up Experience Required

This is not a production welding position.

Mid-State Weldingis seeking a Structural Steel Fitter whose primary expertise is reading shop drawings, laying out steel assemblies, measuring and verifying dimensions, and fitting components accurately before final welding.

The right candidate will be able to take individual steel components and use shop drawings, piece marks, dimensions, and weld symbols to build a properly aligned, square, and complete assembly. Welding experience is helpful; however, welding experience alone does not meet the requirements for this position.

Structural Fitter Responsibilities:

  • Read shop drawings, weld symbols, piece marks, dimensions, and bill of material information.
  • Fit and assemble beams, columns, plates, angles, channels, stairs, rails, platforms, and welded steel assemblies.
  • Lay out work using tape measures, squares, levels, clamps, magnets, and fitting tools.
  • Align, square, clamp, and tack components before final welding.
  • Verify dimensions, hole locations, orientation, and fit-up accuracy.
  • Identify drawing conflicts or missing information before fabrication moves forward.
  • Work closely with welders, machine operators, supervisors, and quality personnel.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Help reduce rework by identifying issues early.

Structural Fitter Responsibilities:

  • Experience fitting structural steel, miscellaneous metals, or welded steel assemblies.
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings.
  • Strong measuring and layout skills.
  • Ability to square, level, align, and fit assemblies accurately.
  • Basic tack welding experience.
  • Understanding of weld symbols, piece marks, and fabrication sequencing.
  • Ability to work independently after receiving instructions.
  • Reliable attendance and consistent work habits.
  • Background check required.

Compensation/Benefits:

  • $26-30 hourly rate (based on experience)
  • Generous medical coverage (90% employee coverage after 60 days)
  • PTO and 9 paid holidays
  • Weekly pay
  • Amazing company culture/work-life balance

Work Environment:

  • Indoor steel fabrication shop.
  • Standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting throughout the shift.
  • Work around overhead cranes, forklifts, welding, grinding, and cutting operations.
  • Required use of PPE and adherence to safety procedures.

Location: Clinton, MS 39056
