Structural Engineering Research Assistant information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineering research assistant?

To thrive as a Structural Engineering Research Assistant, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, data analysis, and research methodologies, typically supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with finite element analysis software (like ANSYS or Abaqus), CAD tools, and programming languages such as MATLAB or Python is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with research teams and presenting findings. These competencies enable accurate experimental work, effective problem-solving, and contribution to advancements in structural engineering research.

What is the difference between Structural Engineering Research Assistant vs Civil Engineering Technician?

AspectStructural Engineering Research AssistantCivil Engineering Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering; some roles may require a master'sAssociate's degree in civil engineering technology or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, university settings, or industry research departmentsConstruction sites, engineering firms, or government agencies
Employer & Industry UsageAcademic institutions, research organizations, engineering firms

The Structural Engineering Research Assistant typically focuses on research, analysis, and testing related to structural systems, often in academic or research settings. In contrast, Civil Engineering Technicians are more involved in fieldwork, construction support, and practical implementation. Both roles require technical knowledge but differ mainly in their focus on research versus field application.

What does a structural engineering research assistant do?

A Structural Engineering Research Assistant supports research projects focused on the analysis, design, and evaluation of structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. Their tasks include conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, preparing technical reports, and assisting with literature reviews. They often work under the supervision of senior researchers or professors and may use specialized software to model and simulate structural behavior. This role is essential for advancing knowledge in structural engineering and helping to develop safer, more efficient construction methods.

How does a structural engineering research assistant typically collaborate with senior researchers and other team members?

As a Structural Engineering Research Assistant, you will regularly interact with senior researchers, faculty, and fellow assistants to support ongoing projects. Collaboration often involves contributing to experimental design, data collection, and analysis, as well as assisting in the preparation of research reports and publications. You may also participate in weekly team meetings to discuss progress and troubleshoot challenges, fostering a dynamic and supportive work environment. Effective communication and openness to feedback are key to thriving in this collaborative academic or research-focused setting.

We believe building engineering is more than systems and structures, it's about powering progress and enabling innovation. As part of HDR's Building Engineering Services Group, you'll help design the critical infrastructure that supports the digital age and shapes the spaces where people work, connect, and thrive. From high-performance data centers driving the future of AI to dynamic commercial environments, your work will directly support technological advancement, sustainability, and human experience. We bring together mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering experts to solve complex design challenges with precision, creativity, and collaboration. Whether you're optimizing energy efficiency, integrating resilient systems, or engineering the backbone of next-generation facilities, your contributions will help define the future of the built environment. This isn't just a job, it's a chance to lead innovation, engineer impact, and build a legacy of excellence.

Reporting to the Structural Engineer, the Structural EIT/Designer is a member of the integrated project team that contributes structural engineering knowledge and analysis to the project during the design phase of our work. The project mix varies with building and non-building structures in collaboration with other business groups within HDR including Architecture, Water, Resources, and Transportation Business Groups. A significant focus is Data Centre projects. The role involves working on multiple projects with project sites in various locations. The Structural EIT/Designer may be involved in construction contract administration, site inspections on different projects, and condition assessments. Common areas for progression and career growth for this position include Structural Engineer (licensure) and technical specialization or project management.

In the role of Structural EIT, we'll count on you to:

  • Conduct analyses to develop design options or recommendations and assist in the preparation of cost estimates and specifications for structural engineering projects
  • Perform routine engineering assignments requiring application of standard techniques and procedures
  • Demonstrate experience in structural drafting of all phases of the construction documents, and create structural drawings in AutoCAD and Revit from engineering sketches and instruction
  • Work independently on small projects or assist more senior engineers on larger projects
  • Give direction to clerical and technical personnel as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Structural Engineering is preferred
  • Candidates hired without their EIT will have the title of "Structural Designer" and will be expected to obtain their EIT where offered by the provincial licensing body.
  • Requires understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis (seismic)
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, BIM 360, Bluebeam
  • Strong skills with  AI-enhanced research and design process support
  • Strong communication and listening skills, self-starter and able to coordinate work with other team members effectively. Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments
  • Good organizational skills, confident curiosity, strong analytical judgment
  • Ability to rigorously audit, validate, and verify all AI-generated outputs (examples: technical correspondence and code interpretations) against core engineering fundamentals and regulations
  • Understanding of applicable design codes (Canada and USA) and specification requirements.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in facility structural engineering design for Concrete, Steel, and Masonry structures
  • Prior experience on heavy industrial projects like Data Centre, etc. is a plus
  • Experience in coding, programming, and design automation to accelerate project workstreams
  • Experience using AI productivity tools to accelerate project workstreams including technical writing, code and specification research, and performance simulation and modelling

Further, the position requires:

  • Compliance with HDR and, as applicable, contractor safety policies and procedures

  • Potential attendance at job sites to support design and construction activities

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, Staad, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar
