The Structural Engineering Research Assistant typically focuses on research, analysis, and testing related to structural systems, often in academic or research settings. In contrast, Civil Engineering Technicians are more involved in fieldwork, construction support, and practical implementation. Both roles require technical knowledge but differ mainly in their focus on research versus field application.

What does a Structural Engineering Research Assistant do?

A Structural Engineering Research Assistant supports research projects focused on the analysis, design, and evaluation of structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. Their tasks include conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, preparing technical reports, and assisting with literature reviews. They often work under the supervision of senior researchers or professors and may use specialized software to model and simulate structural behavior. This role is essential for advancing knowledge in structural engineering and helping to develop safer, more efficient construction methods.

How does a Structural Engineering Research Assistant typically collaborate with senior researchers and other team members?

As a Structural Engineering Research Assistant, you will regularly interact with senior researchers, faculty, and fellow assistants to support ongoing projects. Collaboration often involves contributing to experimental design, data collection, and analysis, as well as assisting in the preparation of research reports and publications. You may also participate in weekly team meetings to discuss progress and troubleshoot challenges, fostering a dynamic and supportive work environment. Effective communication and openness to feedback are key to thriving in this collaborative academic or research-focused setting.

Job description

About Veev

Veev is leading the transformation of the construction industry with an innovative approach to modular home construction. Veev's prefabricated closed-panel systems allow homes to be assembled efficiently on-site while delivering a more sustainable and higher-quality final product than traditional construction. As a new subsidiary of Lennar, Veev leverages the strength and scale of its parent company while maintaining the speed and disruptive approach of its roots as a Silicon Valley-based startup. Veev has developed a vertically integrated approach that involves multidisciplinary collaboration across real estate, design, development, engineering, manufacturing, and construction.

This role is critical to Veev's mission of transforming construction through modern, sustainable, and efficient building systems. In this role, you will directly contribute to the development and validation of structural solutions that improve how homes are designed, manufactured, assembled, inspected, and delivered. Your work will have a tangible impact on Veev's ability to scale high-quality homebuilding through better engineering, stronger DFMA, and tighter integration between design, factory, and field execution.

The Role

As a Senior Structural Engineer within Research & Development, you will help develop and validate the next generation of structural building systems for Veev's vertically integrated homebuilding platform. This is a hands-on R&D engineering role focused on turning early concepts into practical, code-compliant, manufacturable, installable, and scalable structural solutions.

This is not a traditional desk-only structural engineering role. The right candidate will be self-motivated, inquisitive, and comfortable working across design, prototyping, factory operations, and field construction to understand how structural systems actually perform in the real world. You will work closely with the R&D Architect, MEP engineering, prototyping, manufacturing, construction, Product, Real Estate, and Engineering Production teams to ensure structural solutions work not only in calculations and models, but also in the factory and in the field.

You will drive structural problem-solving across load paths, framing strategies, panelized assemblies, connections, anchorage, tolerances, installation sequencing, and code-driven constraints. You will support prototype builds, evaluate first-article feedback, coordinate with internal and external engineering partners, and help translate structural concepts into validated solutions that can be released into Veev's product platform.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and validation of structural solutions for Veev's closed-panel building systems, including framing strategies, load paths, connections, anchorage, bracing, and structural interfaces.
  • Partner with the R&D Architect, MEP engineering, and prototype teams to integrate structural requirements into early-stage architectural, product, and building-system concepts.
  • Develop practical structural details and assembly strategies that account for code compliance, constructability, DFMA principles, manufacturing constraints, installation sequence, inspection requirements, and field execution.
  • Perform structural analysis, calculations, and technical evaluations to validate concepts, justify design decisions, and support internal or external engineering review.
  • Evaluate structural risks and constraints related to panelized construction, light-frame or light-gauge systems, lateral load paths, openings, penetrations, fastening, tolerances, transportation, lifting, and site installation.
  • Design prototypes, mockups, test plans, and validation methods to assess feasibility, structural performance, code compliance, manufacturability, constructability, and field readiness.
  • Support root-cause analysis and problem solving for structural issues identified through prototyping, factory builds, NPI, quality feedback, construction execution, or jurisdictional review.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external engineering partners to develop new structural solutions, improve existing models, and validate new technologies before formal release.
  • Help define structural design rules, technical standards, lessons learned, connection details, and scalable building-system approaches for future Veev models.
  • Communicate structural decisions, risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly through calculations, sketches, details, design reviews, and written technical summaries.

Must-Have Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on structural engineering, building systems, construction technology, product development, manufacturing, or structural design experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of structural behavior, load paths, framing systems, connections, anchorage, bracing, lateral systems, and code-informed design.
  • Experience with light-frame construction, cold-formed steel, light-gauge steel, wood framing, panelized construction, modular construction, prefabricated building systems, or similar building-system platforms.
  • Proven ability to solve practical structural, manufacturing, installation, or construction problems in real-world environments.
  • Experience developing structural details, calculations, design studies, prototype concepts, mockups, test plans, validation methods, or technical recommendations.
  • Familiarity with DFMA, first-article validation, prototype testing, structural testing, product lifecycle development, or similar methods for validating new building-system solutions.
  • Strong understanding of structural coordination within architectural, MEP, manufacturing, transportation, installation, inspection, and field execution constraints.
  • Strong Revit experience, with the ability to develop, review, and coordinate structural information within BIM-based project workflows.
  • Proficiency with CAD, structural analysis, or technical documentation workflows, with the ability to develop and review drawings, sketches, calculations, and assembly details.
  • Ability to independently structure ambiguous technical problems, evaluate tradeoffs, and drive practical engineering decisions.
  • Self-motivated, inquisitive, and comfortable exercising independent judgment in early-stage R&D, prototype, or product-development environments.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills with the ability to explain structural issues, risks, assumptions, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly.

Nice-to-Have Skills and Competencies

  • Familiarity with California residential building codes, ASCE 7, AISI, ACI, NDS, IBC, CRC, CBC, or other relevant U.S. structural codes and standards.
  • Experience with structural design for manufactured, modular, or off-site assembled building products in a production or repeatable product-platform environment.
  • Experience working directly with factory teams, field crews, installers, inspectors, external EORs, or construction partners.
  • Experience with ACC/BIM 360, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Rhino/Grasshopper, Navisworks, Bluebeam, structural analysis tools, or similar design and coordination software.
  • Experience developing structural standards, design rules, connection libraries, reusable details, or scalable building-system approaches.
  • PE license, SE license, EIT certification, or progress toward professional licensure.
  • Familiarity with computational design, parametric modeling, digital fabrication, CNC, robotic fabrication, or advanced manufacturing workflows.
