Job description

Job Announcement $5,000 Sign-On Bonus* Fairfax County's Facilities Management Department (FMD) is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking structural engineer to lead large scale and complex capital and non-capital projects in occupied county spaces. This is an exciting opportunity for a registered professional engineer who thrives on collaboration, problem solving, and delivering high-quality, cost-efficient solutions that support critical county operations. In this senior-level position, you will guide the development, design, and implementation of major structural and civil engineering projects.

Working under the general direction of the Project Coordinator (Principal Engineer) and/or the Division Director of Design, Engineering and Construction, you will serve as the county's primary design representative-leading cross functional renewal projects, resolving construction issues, and ensuring project success from concept through completion. Key Responsibilities: Leads the planning, design, and management of large or complex capital projects in occupied spaces. Establishes project goals, performance standards, schedules, budgets, and quality benchmarks.

Serves as a subject matter expert for the department and multiple county agencies. Reviews plans, specifications, and engineering documents for structural and civil systems to ensure compliance with codes, standards, and project requirements. Performs and reviews engineering calculations, reports, construction drawings, and technical documents.

Signs and seals engineering work as a licensed professional engineer. Ensures projects are completed on time, meets FMD and industry quality standards, and remains financially and operationally viable. Leads design projects, collaborates with diverse stakeholders, and solves complex engineering challenges.

Note: This position is designated an essential employee. Night and weekend work hours may be required. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus, four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.

Possession of a valid Virginia Professional Engineer or Architect license is required. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid driver's license Valid Professional Structural Engineer License for the state of Virginia (Required). An individual who possesses a valid Structural Professional Engineer license in another state will be granted a temporary exemption of a maximum of six months to this requirement pending the Virginia Board for Professional Engineers decision regarding that individual's application for reciprocity.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer. BONUS ELIGIBILITY: Positions within this classification that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Professional Structural Engineer license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 5 plus years' experience as a lead Structural P.E. in commercial building structural system design and construction

3 Yyears' experience as the lead Structural P.E, in authoring and producing design and specification of structural system for commercial mission critical buildings. 3 years' experience assessing and evaluating commercial building (1 story and multiple story - minimum of 10 story buildings) structural failures to include authoring, recommending, and designing remediation. Strong contract management skills

Experience supervising staff and strong staff management skills PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to climb ladders, access tight spaces, crawl, reach, lift 25 lbs, push 25lbs, etc. Dexterity to use hand tools. Must be able to access facility equipment and equipment rooms.

Must be able to communicate by phone. Must be mobile to access active construction sites. Must communicate with others verbally and in writing.

Must drive a motor vehicle. Vision to see detail drawings, construction and discern color. Ability to work with extended exposure to outside environment including harsh weather as well as inside environments of extreme heat and cold.
