What is a structural engineer project manager?

Structural Engineer Project Managers are professionals who oversee the design, planning, and execution of construction projects with a focus on structural integrity and safety. They combine engineering expertise with project management skills to ensure that structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure are built according to specifications, codes, and budgets. Their responsibilities include coordinating teams, managing timelines and resources, ensuring compliance with regulations, and communicating with clients and stakeholders. They play a crucial role in solving technical challenges and delivering projects successfully from conception to completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer project manager?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Project Manager, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, project management, and typically a PE license or equivalent engineering certification. Proficiency with design and analysis software like AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools, as well as experience with project management systems, is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set top candidates apart by enabling effective team coordination and client relations. These skills ensure safe, efficient project delivery that meets technical standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineer project managers when balancing technical design with project management duties?

Job description

Civil Project Manager (PE) โ€“ Shape Communities, Lead Projects
High Point, NC | Engineering

Must have an active North Carolina PE license to be considered

Build Whatโ€™s Next โ€” With Real Ownership

At FEI, weโ€™re not just designing sitesโ€”weโ€™re helping shape communities across North Carolina. Weโ€™re looking for a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) whoโ€™s ready to step into a true leadership role: guiding land development projects from concept to construction while building strong client relationships along the way.

If youโ€™re someone who wants more than just โ€œchecking plansโ€โ€”if you want responsibility, influence, and a seat at the tableโ€”this is that role.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Lead land development projects as Engineer-of-Record and Project Manager
  • Take responsibility for project outcomes: quality, timelines, budgets, and client satisfaction
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, municipalities, and regulatory agencies
  • Guide and mentor Assistant Project Managers and technical staff
  • Design and review site plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D, including:
    • Grading, erosion control, and subdivisions
    • Water, sewer, and stormwater systems
    • Stormwater management and final plats
  • Coordinate permitting and approvals with local and state agencies
  • Represent projects in meetings with boards, agencies, and stakeholders
What You Bring
  • Active North Carolina PE license (required)
  • Bachelorโ€™s in Civil Engineering (ABET-accredited)
  • 5+ years in land development engineering
  • 2+ years leading projects or managing people
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Clear communicator and confident leader
  • Valid NC driverโ€™s license
Nice to Have
  • Experience with Ajera or similar project financial software
  • Background in client-facing consulting
  • Familiarity with land surveying principles
Why FEI?
  • Meaningful project responsibility โ€“ You lead projects, not just pieces of them
  • Relationship-driven culture โ€“ We value trust, not bureaucracy
  • Leadership impact โ€“ Your decisions shape projects and outcomes
  • Predictable schedule โ€“
    Monโ€“Thu: 7:30 AM โ€“ 5:30 PM
    Fri: 7:30 AM โ€“ 11:30 AM
A Quick Note
  • This role is not for EITs or unlicensed engineers
  • Applicants must be authorized to work full-time in the U.S.
  • FEI does not offer visa sponsorship
  • Direct applicants onlyโ€”no recruiter submissions
