What is a Structural Analyst?

A Structural Analyst is an engineering professional who evaluates and analyzes the strength, stability, and rigidity of structures such as buildings, bridges, or aircraft. They use mathematical models, computer simulations, and physical testing to ensure that structures can withstand various loads and stresses without failing. Their work is essential in the design phase to verify that safety standards are met, and they often collaborate closely with architects and other engineers. Structural Analysts help prevent structural failures by identifying potential weaknesses and recommending improvements.

What is the difference between Structural Analyst vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural AnalystStructural Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, certifications varyBachelor's or master's in civil or structural engineering, PE license often required
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, using analysis software to evaluate structuresDesign, planning, site visits, and project management
Industry UsageCommon in consulting firms, construction, and engineering servicesDesign and construction firms, infrastructure projects

While both roles involve structural analysis, a Structural Analyst primarily focuses on evaluating existing structures using software, whereas a Structural Engineer designs and oversees new structures. The roles often overlap in skills and industry settings, but their core responsibilities differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Analyst, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, finite element analysis, and a relevant engineering degree, often with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with analysis software such as ANSYS, SAP2000, or Abaqus, as well as CAD tools, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precise analysis, effective collaboration, and the safety and reliability of structural designs.

What are some common challenges a Structural Analyst faces when working on multidisciplinary engineering projects?

Structural Analysts often collaborate with architects, mechanical engineers, and construction teams, which can present challenges such as aligning design priorities and managing communication across disciplines. Balancing structural integrity with aesthetic or functional requirements frequently requires creative problem-solving and adaptability. Additionally, tight deadlines and evolving project specifications may demand quick analysis and revisions, making effective time management a valuable skill. Proactive communication and openness to feedback are key to ensuring successful project outcomes in this dynamic environment.

Job description

Job Title: Structural Analysis EngineerJob Description

As a Structural Analysis Engineer, you will research and develop structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic, or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of products. This includes structures, mechanical equipment, and maintenance designs. You will analyze damage tolerance, durability, design allowable, and structural modeling. The role involves working on specific structural engineering specialties such as dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue, general finite element analysis (FEA), and material science.

Responsibilities
  • Research and develop structural engineering specifications for metallic, non-metallic, and composite structures throughout all phases of the product life cycle, from preliminary design to sustainment.
  • Analyze, research, and develop solutions to a variety of complex structural problems.
  • Perform a variety of classical and finite element analyses, including loads development, dynamics, stress, stability, fatigue, and thermal assessment.
  • Conduct nonlinear analysis right up to the point of failure in projects like hypersonic missile weapons systems and missile interceptor programs.
  • Perform hand calculations to verify work and software or simulation tools.
  • Collaborate closely with multiple engineering disciplines due to the complex nature of systems analyzed.
  • Participate in task planning, technical peer reviews, and mentoring junior engineers.
Essential Skills
  • 8-10 years of experience in structural analysis, preferably in aerospace and defense industries.
  • 6-8 years of experience in linear/nonlinear FEA and fracture and fatigue analysis.
  • 2 years of experience in thermal mapping with structures coupled, with high-temperature materials experience being a plus.
  • Proficiency in FEMAP and other relevant software tools for structural analysis.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of classical and finite element analysis solution types.
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline; or a Master’s of Science.
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with metals, non-metals, and composite materials.
  • Understanding and application of solid mechanics principles, concepts, practices, and standards.
  • Experience in axisymmetric analysis and other methods used in structural mechanics.
  • Experience with stress, fastener, bolted joint, buckling analysis, and other types of calculations.
Work Environment

The role is based in a state-of-the-art facility in Chandler, which has been fully remodeled. The facility includes a cafeteria, pool tables, an outside basketball court, outdoor giant Jenga, outdoor cornhole, outdoor BBQs, and an indoor gym. The work environment is dynamic and collaborative, with interesting programs and projects ranging from interceptors, missiles, rockets, and other launch vehicles.
