Job description

Data Center Business Development Manager

Location: Calgary, Alberta preferred (Open to U.S.-based candidates with strong data center industry relationships)

Position Overview

A growing energy developer is seeking a Data Center Business Development Manager to lead customer development efforts for data center opportunities tied to the company's power generation strategy in Canada.

This is a strategic, customer-facing role focused on identifying, engaging, and securing customers evaluating Canadian data center projects. The organization is bringing together reliable power generation, strategically located land, permitting progress, and project development capabilities to support the growing demand for data center infrastructure.

The successful candidate will develop relationships with hyperscalers, cloud providers, colocation operators, technology companies, AI and high-performance computing organizations, enterprise data center operators, developers, and other large power users. This individual will build relationships with key decision-makers, understand customer requirements, and position the company as a trusted partner for data center development in Canada.

This role will work closely with an internal Data Center Design Engineer, who will serve as the technical subject matter expert. Together, they will evaluate customer requirements and determine how the organization can support each opportunity through power availability, land, permitting, infrastructure, design, project timing, reliability, and long-term execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities with data center customers, developers, hyperscalers, cloud providers, colocation operators, technology companies, AI infrastructure companies, and other large-load users.
  • Build and manage relationships with senior decision-makers involved in site selection, infrastructure development, power procurement, data center expansion, real estate, engineering, finance, and corporate development.
  • Target U.S. and Canadian organizations interested in developing, owning, operating, leasing, or partnering on data center projects in Canada.
  • Position the company's power generation capabilities, available capacity, land position, permitting progress, and project development expertise as a solution for customers seeking scalable, reliable infrastructure.
  • Partner with the Data Center Design Engineer to understand customer requirements, including power needs, project timelines, facility type, availability expectations, operating models, technical constraints, and development priorities.
  • Qualify opportunities based on customer fit, project size, power demand, commercial potential, timing, site requirements, and likelihood of execution.
  • Support early-stage customer discussions, presentations, proposals, partnership structures, and commercial development strategies.
  • Help determine whether customers require build-to-suit facilities, powered land, powered shell solutions, colocation environments, dedicated facilities, or other infrastructure models.
  • Monitor data center market trends, development activity, customer expansion plans, power constraints, competitive projects, and regional opportunities across North America.
  • Represent the organization professionally with customers, partners, consultants, developers, utilities, advisors, and other industry stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership with regular updates on pipeline activity, target accounts, customer feedback, market intelligence, commercial priorities, and project risks.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven business development, commercial development, sales, partnerships, or customer development experience within the data center, energy, infrastructure, real estate, technology, colocation, utility, or large-load power sectors.
  • Strong understanding of the data center ecosystem, including hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, cloud, AI, or high-performance computing markets.
  • Established relationships with data center developers, operators, site selection teams, cloud providers, technology companies, power procurement teams, or other key industry decision-makers.
  • Ability to understand and discuss customer requirements related to power availability, site readiness, reliability, permitting, infrastructure, project timing, and commercial structures.
  • Experience developing complex, long-cycle business opportunities involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong commercial judgment with the ability to qualify opportunities, prioritize high-value prospects, and advance opportunities from initial engagement through active project development.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering and technical teams while maintaining a strong customer and commercial focus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience selling or developing power-backed data center sites, build-to-suit projects, powered land, energy infrastructure, colocation capacity, or other large-load industrial developments.
  • Knowledge of power generation, utility interconnection, energy procurement, site development, permitting, or infrastructure project development.
  • Experience working with U.S.-based data center customers evaluating Canadian or international expansion opportunities.
  • Experience structuring partnerships, development agreements, offtake discussions, leasing arrangements, or customer-led development opportunities.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a well-connected business development professional with a strong understanding of how major data center customers evaluate power availability, land, project timing, risk, reliability, and execution capability. They are credible with sophisticated buyers, comfortable engaging senior executives, and capable of working closely with technical experts to develop customer-focused solutions.

This individual is entrepreneurial, persistent, commercially driven, and excited by the opportunity to help build a growing data center platform supported by reliable power generation and strategic infrastructure development.
