About the Role:
The Health and Safety Manager serves as the senior site leader for health and safety, providing strategic direction, technical expertise and day-to-day leadership for all plant health and safety programs. Partners with plant leadership to drive a proactive safety culture, manage risk, ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulatory requirements, and lead continuous improvement initiatives that protect employees and support operational performance.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the plant's health and safety strategy, programs and performance objectives in alignment with company and operational goals.
  • Serve as the primary site leader for health and safety, providing expert guidance to plant leadership, supervisors and employees on regulatory compliance, risk management and safe operating practices.
  • Partner with the Plant Manager and site leadership team to drive a proactive safety culture, strengthen accountability and embed health and safety into daily operations and decision-making.
  • Lead the design and delivery of health and safety training programs, ensuring employees and leaders are equipped to recognize hazards, manage risk and work safely.
  • Oversee the site audit and inspection process, evaluate findings and ensure timely implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Lead and/or oversee incidents, injury and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis, corrective action planning and follow-up to prevent recurrence.
  • Own site health and safety performance reporting, including analysis of leading and lagging indicators, identification of trends and presentation of actionable recommendations to plant leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local health and safety regulations, and serve as the primary site contact during regulatory inspections, agency inquiries and investigations.
  • Lead the development, review and maintenance of site health and safety policies, procedures and written programs to ensure regulatory compliance and operational effectiveness.
  • Partners with HR, Operations and other stakeholders to manage workers' compensation cases, support return-to-work efforts and reduce injury-related costs and exposure.
  • Lead critical risk management efforts for the site, including programs related to industrial hygiene, PPE, hazard communication and other high-risk activities as applicable.
  • Support the safe introduction of new chemicals, materials, processes and equipment by ensuring appropriate hazard review, documentation, employee communication and control measures are in place.
  • Partner with Engineering, Operations and Environmental teams to support capital projects, process changes and operational improvements with appropriate health and safety risk assessment and controls.
  • Support environmental compliance efforts as needed in coordination with the Knauf Environmental team to ensure alignment with applicable regulatory and company requirements.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of required health and safety documentation, records and regulatory reporting.
  • Notify regulatory agencies as required and lead appropriate internal response, documentation and corrective action for reportable events or compliance concerns.

Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in health and safety or related field preferred

Experience:
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working with occupational health and safety regulatory issues.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working in a union environment may be required, depending on the location.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene and safety, occupational health and hazard communication
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements
  • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to quickly analyze information and make pragmatic decisions that will benefit the organization
  • Ability to educate and train others in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Ability to motivate others and gain buy-in as it relates to health and safety issues/topics
  • Ability to work hands-on in corporate and industrial environments
  • Ability to manage large projects within scope and budget
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time
  • Computer skills in MS Windows environment; proficient in Word, PowerPoint and Excel
