Assistant Director of Student Activities
Job Description
Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Student Activities supports the planning, development, and execution of comprehensive student engagement initiatives that foster leadership, involvement, and community at Hillsdale College. Working collaboratively with the Directors of Student Programs and Student Activities, this position coordinates signature programs and campus events, provides operational support for a wide range of Student Affairs initiatives, and cultivates meaningful opportunities for student development. The role also leads strategic communications, marketing, and branding efforts across Student Affairs departments, ensuring consistent messaging that advances the College's mission and enhances the student experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide programmatic and administrative support for a broad range of Student Affairs initiatives, including but not limited to GOAL Programs, the Student Activities Board, Student Federation, Residence Life, and student clubs and organizations.
  • Partner with Student Activities staff to collect, analyze, and track student engagement data to evaluate program effectiveness, identify opportunities for improvement, and enhance students' intellectual, social, and moral growth.
  • Create, manage, and maintain digital and print communications for Student Affairs, including departmental websites, event marketing, and promotional materials.
  • Design engaging graphics and communication materials that promote student programs, campus events, and institutional initiatives through a variety of digital and print platforms.
  • Develop, coordinate, and evaluate student engagement initiatives, including Curate programming, the Curate magazine, the annual Curate Summit, the Student Leadership Workshop, Orientation, and other engagement initiatives that enrich the student experience.
  • Plan and execute complex events by coordinating schedules, venues, speakers, transportation, housing, meals, contracts, vendors, facilities, and event logistics while collaborating with campus departments and community partners.
  • Assist with the supervision, training, and development of student employees and staff supporting Student Affairs programs and events.
  • Build collaborative relationships with campus offices, external vendors, and community partners to support the successful planning and execution of Student Affairs initiatives.

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Knowledge in graphic design
  • Valid Michigan driver's license with the ability to operate a vehicle.

Preferred Experience:
  • Supervisory experience in student programming or a related field. Website management and experience in marketing management.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Competence in managing and mentoring student employees and volunteers.
  • Experience with event planning and program development.
  • Proficiency in budget planning and fiscal management.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with student government operations and student services best practices.
  • Working knowledge of customer service and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Technological proficiency, including but not limited to:
    • Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, Premiere Pro)
    • Digital photography and videography
    • MailChimp and Prezi

  • Maintain a reliable attendance record and meet deadlines consistently.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and participate in professional development.
  • Represent the College at relevant meetings, conferences, and events.
