Vice President of Finance / Chief Financial Officer / Treasurer

Position Summary

The Vice President of Finance / Chief Financial Officer / Treasurer is responsible for leading all accounting and financial activities of the organization. This individual provides strategic financial leadership and oversight across accounting, budgeting, investments, risk management, reinsurance, regulatory compliance, financial planning, and corporate governance.

The CFO works closely with the President, Board of Directors, senior leadership, external auditors, regulators, actuaries, bankers, and other business partners to support the organization’s strategic and financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Department Management

• Lead and oversee Accounting, Risk Management, and Investment functions.
• Establish departmental goals, policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
• Ensure team members are appropriately trained, developed, and supervised.
• Maintain succession planning for key departmental positions.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

• Ensure accurate financial records and timely preparation of financial statements and reports.
• Analyze key financial metrics and business trends.
• Identify opportunities to improve financial performance, operating efficiency, and financial controls.
• Provide financial analysis and guidance to leadership and individual business units.

Regulatory Compliance & Internal Controls

• Ensure compliance with applicable insurance regulatory, tax, financial reporting, and accounting requirements.
• Establish and maintain appropriate internal accounting controls.
• Ensure financial data is complete, accurate, and appropriately safeguarded.

Corporate Planning & Budgeting

• Coordinate development of the annual corporate plan and assist with presentations to the Board of Directors.
• Manage the annual operating and capital budgeting process.
• Oversee monthly budget variance reporting and analysis.
• Assist departments in identifying opportunities to improve operations, reduce costs, and strengthen controls.

Strategic Planning

• Partner with the President on long-term strategic and financial planning.
• Evaluate financial strategies designed to strengthen the organization’s financial position.
• Participate in the evaluation and due diligence of potential mergers, acquisitions, and other business opportunities.

Investments

• Develop and oversee the organization’s investment policy.
• Establish appropriate asset allocation targets.
• Ensure the investment strategy aligns with the organization’s overall business strategy and risk tolerance.

Loss Reserves

• Coordinate loss and loss adjustment expense reserve reviews with outside actuaries, auditors, and regulators.
• Serve as a key contact for reserve-related inquiries.
• Chair the internal Reserve Committee and ensure reserving practices remain consistent with approved policies and targeted reserve margins.

Reinsurance

• Negotiate, administer, and regularly evaluate the organization’s reinsurance program.
• Evaluate reinsurers and program structure to ensure alignment with the organization’s business strategy and risk profile.
• Work closely with leadership and the Enterprise Risk Management Committee regarding reinsurance strategy.

Enterprise Risk Management

• Establish and oversee the organization’s overall enterprise risk management framework.
• Develop risk metrics and methodologies for identifying, evaluating, and monitoring risk exposures.
• Chair the internal ERM Committee and communicate key risk matters to the appropriate Board committee.
• Participate in other organizational committees related to operating risk, loss reserves, pricing, employee benefits, and retirement plans.

Corporate Insurance

• Negotiate and administer corporate insurance programs, including D&O, fidelity bond, and commercial insurance coverage.

Tax Planning

• Coordinate federal, state, and local tax planning.
• Work with accounting and investment functions to identify appropriate tax strategies.

External Relationships

• Manage relationships with external auditors, regulators, actuaries, bankers, and other financial partners

Corporate Governance

• Attend Board and committee meetings as a member of management.
• Provide financial analyses, recommendations, and reporting to the Board.
• Assist with committee charters, agendas, minutes, and governance documentation.
• Monitor relevant NAIC developments and help maintain appropriate corporate governance policies and procedures.

Compensation & Retirement Plan Oversight

• Maintain oversight of the organization’s deferred compensation plan.
• Coordinate plan contributions and distributions with the organization’s recordkeeper.

Additional Responsibilities

• Serve as a financial advisor to business units and senior leadership.
• Participate in special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by the President.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The CFO is responsible for goal setting, performance management, employee development, and compensation administration for accounting leadership, with ultimate responsibility for the overall accounting function.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
• Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.
• Property & Casualty insurance industry experience strongly preferred.

Licenses & Professional Designations

• CPA designation required.
• Insurance industry coursework or professional designations, such as CPCU, are a plus.
