Job description

Job Description: Senior Software Engineer (Technical Lead) โ€” E-Commerce & Cloud Platform Location: Onsite (hybrid work a potential) โ€” Springville, UtahEmployment Type: Full-TimeExperience Level: Senior About Rustica Rustica is a design and manufacturing company known for custom doors, hardware, and home products. As Rustica expands into a broader home furnishings brand, technology plays an increasingly important role in customer experience, product configuration, order processing, manufacturing, and business operations. Rusticaโ€™s technology ecosystem includes a customer-facing e-commerce storefront, an internal commerce administration platform, a manufacturing and operations platform, and the AWS and Cloudflare infrastructure supporting these applications. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer capable of taking technical responsibility for business-critical production systems. This position requires someone who can build new capabilities, improve existing applications, identify architectural risks, and ensure that Rusticaโ€™s software and infrastructure remain secure, reliable, and maintainable. Position Summary The Senior Software Engineer will serve as a hands-on Technical Lead for Rusticaโ€™s customer-facing commerce platform and the supporting systems that connect customers, employees, business operations, and manufacturing. The primary focus of this position is Rusticaโ€™s revenue-critical e-commerce storefront, including product configuration, pricing, cart, checkout, payments, customer accounts, content, and order processing. The engineer will also contribute to Rusticaโ€™s internal commerce administration platform and its manufacturing and operations platform, which is being developed to manage production workflows, employee activity, time tracking, operational reporting, and other internal business processes. This role is also responsible for the AWS and Cloudflare infrastructure supporting Rusticaโ€™s applications. This includes deployment, security, monitoring, scheduled workloads, DNS, content delivery, backups, recovery, and production incident response. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities. The Technical Lead designation refers to ownership of architecture, engineering quality, and production reliability; it does not necessarily include direct people management. This is not solely a feature-development or prototype-building position. The engineer must be able to evaluate existing and rapidly developed code critically, identify unsafe or fragile architecture, and implement production-quality solutions that preserve security and data integrity. AI-assisted development tools may be used, but the engineer remains responsible for validating architecture, correctness, security, performance, maintainability, and production readiness. Key Responsibilities E-Commerce and Customer-Facing SystemsDevelop, maintain, and improve Rusticaโ€™s customer-facing e-commerce storefront.Support complex configurable products involving options, dependencies, dimensions, pricing, discounts, lead times, parts, and bills of materials.Own critical customer workflows including product configuration, cart, checkout, payment, account registration, trade accounts, order history, and order creation.Maintain integrations with payment processors, tax providers, authentication systems, transactional email services, analytics platforms, and other external services.Protect the correctness and security of revenue-critical payment and checkout workflows.Design appropriate protections against duplicate payments, card-testing activity, fraudulent transactions, repeated submissions, and inconsistent order state.Improve storefront performance, accessibility, mobile usability, SEO, reliability, and customer experience.Diagnose and resolve production problems affecting customers, payments, pricing, or orders. Application and Backend ArchitectureDesign and maintain secure APIs connecting the storefront, administrative systems, manufacturing operations, and third-party platforms.Establish clear system boundaries and data contracts between applications.Design and maintain PostgreSQL schemas, migrations, queries, indexes, constraints, and transactional workflows.Build systems that remain correct during concurrent requests, retries, partial failures, duplicate events, and third-party outages.Prevent duplicate payments, duplicate order submissions, conflicting updates, partial data writes, and inconsistent state between systems.Build reliable background jobs, queues, scheduled processes, retry policies, and failure-recovery workflows.Evaluate existing architecture and identify security, reliability, performance, and maintainability risks.Improve or replace fragile architecture without unnecessarily disrupting working production systems.Establish automated testing around revenue-critical and operationally critical behavior.Lead architecture reviews and maintain practical engineering standards.Review code for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with established architecture. Internal Commerce AdministrationMaintain and improve the internal platform used to manage products, product configurations, pricing, orders, customers, content, promotions, and operational settings.Build tools that allow non-technical employees to manage complex commerce data safely.Improve permissions, audit history, conflict handling, validation, and data-integrity protections.Develop integrations connecting commerce data with ERP, manufacturing, marketing, shipping, accounting, and reporting systems.Automate repetitive business processes while preserving appropriate review, audit, and recovery controls.Ensure administrative changes cannot unintentionally compromise storefront behavior or production data. Manufacturing and Operations SystemsContribute to the architecture and development of Rusticaโ€™s manufacturing and operations platform.Build systems for manufacturing order intake, production workflows, work assignments, employee activity, time tracking, material usage, exceptions, and operational reporting.Create trustworthy data models for measuring manufacturing cycle times and identifying production constraints.Ensure manufacturing metrics are based on clearly defined and auditable events rather than fragile interface behavior.Maintain reliable order delivery from the commerce platform into internal manufacturing and downstream business systems.Develop tools supporting inventory, scheduling, maintenance, safety, customer service, IT, and other operational departments.Support integrations with CAD, SolidWorks, printing systems, shop-floor equipment, managed devices, and related manufacturing technology when required.Help determine when Rustica should build an internal capability and when it should integrate an established external system.Review rapidly developed or AI-assisted internal application code before it becomes critical to business operations. AWS, Cloudflare, and Production InfrastructureAdminister and improve Rusticaโ€™s AWS-hosted applications and supporting cloud services.Maintain application hosting, serverless workloads, scheduled jobs, queues, alerts, secrets, permissions, and monitoring.Work with AWS services such as Amplify, Lambda, EventBridge, IAM, Secrets Manager, SQS, SNS, CloudWatch, Lightsail, and related infrastructure.Maintain repeatable deployments and infrastructure-as-code using tools such as AWS SAM, CloudFormation, and GitHub Actions.Manage Cloudflare DNS, CDN and caching behavior, TLS, redirects, security rules, WAF controls, bot protection, and Turnstile.Maintain least-privilege access, secure environment configuration, secrets management, and credential lifecycle practices.Own or improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment validation, rollback procedures, database migrations, and environment consistency.Maintain application monitoring, error reporting, structured logging, health checks, alarms, and actionable production notifications.Maintain database and file backups, offsite retention, restore procedures, and disaster-recovery plans.Participate in production incident response and perform root-cause analysis following significant failures.Monitor infrastructure security, reliability, performance, and cost.Document production systems so they can be operated and recovered without relying exclusively on undocumented knowledge. Technical Leadership and Business CollaborationWork with leadership and department stakeholders to translate business and operational needs into appropriate technical solutions.Evaluate proposed work based on business value, technical risk, complexity, and long-term maintenance cost.Communicate architectural decisions and technical risks clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.Provide technical direction, code review, and guidance to employees, contractors, and other developers.Establish practical engineering standards without introducing unnecessary process or complexity.Maintain architectural documentation, system diagrams, operational runbooks, deployment procedures, and recovery instructions.Take responsibility for projects from discovery and design through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing support.Make informed build-versus-buy decisions based on business requirements, risk, and total cost of ownership.Leave systems more understandable, testable, and supportable than they were found. Required QualificationsSeven or more years of professional software engineering experience, including at least three years owning architectural decisions, production reliability, or technical direction for business-critical systems.Demonstrated ownership of a revenue-critical e-commerce platform or a comparably sensitive transactional system involving payments, orders, billing, or financial workflows.Demonstrated ability to evaluate an existing codebase, identify architectural and security risks, and safely improve or replace fragile production systems.Experience maintaining applications for which downtime, incorrect data, or failed transactions have meaningful business consequences.Advanced proficiency with JavaScript and TypeScript.Strong professional experience with Vue, Nuxt, or a comparable modern frontend framework, with the ability to work effectively in an existing Vue/Nuxt codebase.Strong backend development experience with Node.js and HTTP APIs.Strong PostgreSQL and relational data-modeling experience.Experience with database transactions, migrations, constraints, indexing, query analysis, and data-integrity protections.Ability to design systems that remain correct under concurrency, retries, partial failure, duplicate requests, and third-party service outages.Hands-on AWS experience involving application hosting, IAM, secrets, monitoring, scheduled workloads, and production troubleshooting.Experience managing Cloudflare or comparable DNS, CDN, WAF, and edge-security infrastructure.Experience with Linux environments, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and repeatable production deployments.Strong application-security fundamentals, including authentication, authorization, input validation, rate limiting, audit logging, secret management, and secure API design.Experience diagnosing difficult production issues using source code, logs, monitoring, database evidence, and reproducible testing.Demonstrated ability to distinguish between a functional prototype and production-ready architecture.Ability to assess unfamiliar or rapidly developed code and determine whether it is safe to deploy.Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.Ability to work independently while making technical risks, assumptions, and tradeoffs visible. Preferred Qualifications Experience in one or more of the following areas is beneficial:Direct experience with e-commerce checkout, payment gateways, fraud prevention, charge processing, or PCI-aware system designComplex product configurators, CPQ systems, BOM generation, or rule-based pricingERP and accounting integrations, particularly NetSuiteManufacturing software, production tracking, inventory, or schedulingAWS SAM, CloudFormation, infrastructure-as-code, and GitHub OIDCSentry or comparable application-observability platformsFirebase Authentication and administrative toolingTransactional email platforms such as PostmarkSales-tax integrations such as AvalaraC#/.NET, Android development, Windows services, or managed-device softwareSolidWorks, CAD automation, or manufacturing engineering workflowsBackup architecture, disaster recovery, security review, or incident leadership Candidates are not expected to have prior experience with every system Rustica uses.
