What does a store display designer do?

A Store Display Designer is responsible for creating visually appealing and effective displays in retail environments to attract customers and promote products. They use their creativity and understanding of marketing principles to plan, design, and set up displays that enhance the shopping experience. Store Display Designers often collaborate with store managers, merchandisers, and marketing teams to ensure the displays align with brand image and sales goals. Their work can include designing window displays, in-store signage, product arrangements, and seasonal decorations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a store display designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Store Display Designer, you need a solid background in visual merchandising, spatial design, and an understanding of consumer psychology, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and experience with display materials and lighting systems is typically necessary. About Hy-Vee

At Hy-Vee, we believe the shortest distance between two people is a smile. We're seeking people with a passion for customer service, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to being part of a team that strives to make our customers' lives easier, healthier and happier.

The Role and Why It's Important

At Hy-Vee, our bakery department helps customers celebrate life's biggest moments, and our Bakery Cake Designers are at the heart of making those moments special. In this role, you'll use your creativity and decorating skills to bring customer visions to life, from birthday cakes and everyday treats to wedding cakes delivered and set up on site. You'll also serve as a lead for part-time employees and collaborate closely with the bakery team to keep production running smoothly.

If you have a passion for decorating, an eye for detail, and enjoy working with customers to create something memorable, we'd love to have you on our team.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting every customer with a smile, taking orders at the bakery counter, and assisting them with their needs throughout the store

  • Check orders for the day, set up a timeline and production schedule, and check cake orders daily for details including size, deco pack, icing needs, and dates

  • Decorate bakery items in a timely manner, keeping current on new designs and trends

  • Develop daily bakery orders for bakers including cakes and sizes needed

  • Track daily retail production and identify tasks to be completed with co-workers

  • Check product dates, pull cases for work, and list items to fill or replace

  • Order supplies for the decorating area and check off the order upon receipt

  • Deliver product and set up wedding cakes on site outside the store

  • Communicate with the Bakery Manager daily regarding displays, weekly ads, and special needs

  • Operate as a lead with part-time and other employees by instructing and reviewing their work

  • Participate in employee cross-training

  • Practice proper sanitation procedures and keep the work area clean, neat, and safe at all times

  • Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call, including taking product orders

  • Follow Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all department and company guidelines

  • Pitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come up

Your Skills

  • Apply strong decorating skills and stay current on cake design trends and techniques

  • Solve practical problems and follow instructions carefully in a fast-paced environment

  • Apply math skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages in day-to-day tasks

  • Lead and guide part-time employees, providing instruction and reviewing their work

  • Communicate clearly with customers, co-workers, and the Bakery Manager

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, Health Wellness Home; Bakery Department Manager

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience

  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience; we'll provide all the training you need to succeed

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role with significant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. You'll work in the bakery department and can expect exposure to flour dust, noise, temperature extremes, cleaning chemicals and solvents, and residual fumes. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
