What are Stern jobs?

Stern jobs typically refer to positions at the stern, or rear, part of a ship. These roles can include various maritime occupations such as deckhands, engineers, or officers responsible for operations and maintenance in this section of the vessel. Stern crew members often handle critical tasks like steering, monitoring machinery, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. The specific duties may vary depending on the type and size of the ship, as well as the individual's rank and specialization.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Stern in the maritime industry, and how can they be managed?

Stern crew members often face challenges related to working in harsh weather conditions and maintaining balance and safety on the vessel. Communication with both the bridge and deck teams is essential to coordinate tasks such as mooring, net handling, or cargo operations. Adapting to variable work hours and maintaining focus during long shifts are also common hurdles. Building strong teamwork skills and staying updated on safety protocols can help mitigate these challenges and ensure smooth operations.

Job description

NYU’s Stern School of Business seeks a strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) to help shape the School’s next chapter in partnership with the Dean and Stern’s senior leadership team. Reporting directly to the Dean, the COO will serve as a key member of the leadership team bringing sharp operational insight and financial acumen to align complex non-academic functions with the School’s ambitious mission. This is a rare opportunity to lead the core infrastructure of a globally recognized business school at a pivotal moment in higher education. The COO will not only oversee critical operations but will serve as a strategic thought partner to the Dean, and actively propel innovation, strengthen collaboration, and position Stern for sustained excellence.

In this highly visible senior leadership role, the COO will help implement strategic direction and operational excellence across finance and budgeting, property development, capital projects and facilities, information technology, and emergency response.

The COO will help shape and implement Stern’s multi-year financial strategy, overseeing financial operations, budget development, long-range forecasting, and fiscal stewardship to ensure strong compliance with University fiscal policies, regulatory requirements, and accounting standards. The COO will provide insight into budgetary trends and partner with senior leaders to expand and strengthen existing and emerging programs, initiatives, and revenue streams. This leader will ensure that Stern’s technical and physical infrastructure continues to meet the evolving needs of more than 6,000 students and 600 faculty and staff. The COO will also help shape and implement a comprehensive School-wide strategy for technology and information resources that advances teaching, learning, research, and administrative excellence. In addition, this leader will build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing, multidisciplinary team, cultivating a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree (MBA or related graduate degree strongly preferred) and 15+ years of progressively responsible leadership in finance, administration, operations, and information technology, including at least 10 years in a senior management role. Proven experience managing complex budgets (> $100M) and multi-function administrative units in higher education, corporate, research, or a comparable mission-driven environment is essential. Leadership experience in a complex organization is preferred.  While experience at a large university or peer business school is useful, it is not essential. Must include experience with and knowledge of fund-based accounting best practices. Exceptional financial acumen, analytical ability, and strategic planning skills are required along with a demonstrated ability to lead organizational change, implement process improvements, and manage competing priorities. Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills with a collaborative leadership style are also essential as is knowledge of sponsored research administration, compliance requirements, and risk management frameworks.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $425,000 to USD $475,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
