Jo b Objective:

The Sterile Processing Depa rtment’s operations involve collection, decontamination, processing, sterilization, high-level disinfection, storage and distribution of instrumentation that support Perioperative Services departments and other clinical departments throughout the organization. Under the general direction of the Director of Surgical Services or designee the Sterile Processing Manager must be capable of working independently in the decontamination and sterile processing areas , upholding all specialty body and regulatory standards, and supporting the education , development, and mentoring of personnel in the sterile processing department . This position will have frequent interaction with P urchasing Department Buyers, but will not have a direct reporting relationship.

1.The Sterile Processing Manager is responsible for assessing, identifying , planning, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and supervising operations, quality, and efficiency of personnel and department services .

2.Maintains continued education and proficiency in the field of sterile processing operations and equipment through education, literature and seminars .

3.This position provides leadership for the department’s overall operations , including:

Develops and ensures compliance with annual departmental operating budget .

Demonstrates 24-hour accountability of general unit activities and functions .

Quality, Policy, and R eg ulatory R equirements

Develop policies and procedures for Sterile Processing Department .

Ensures adherence to departmental policies/procedures / regulatory requirements.

Develops standards of care, qua lity of work and best practices for department .

Ensures departmental standards of operation and policies are in compliance with regulatory agencies including but not limited to CMS, TJC, AAMI, AORN, APIC, CDPH, OSHA, etc.

Acts as a resource for others within the department and in other departments in relation to decontamination, processing, sterilization, and high-level disinfection. Demonstrates correct departmental p rocesses and procedures to personnel.

Recommends equipment changes, upgrades and additions to meet manufacturer instructions for use (IFU) for all items processed .

Ensures personnel perform work within prescribed technical and safety standards .

Ensures that all sterilization records are accurate , current, and compliant with regulatory requirements .

Participates in department and hospital Performance Improvement activities as required .

Represents department/Surgical Services by attending appropriate departmental and facility meetings (as requested), such as infection prevention, environment of care, etc.

Collaborates with supporting departments such as infection prevention, biomed, engineering and plant services, environmental services, and others as needed to ensure quality within department.

A. Operations

Ensures effective management of human, fiscal and physical plant resources .

Seeks opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operati onal processes and productivity .

Supervises personnel as appropriate to achieve established operational performance and quality goals .

Manages collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, distribution and inventory of instrumentation .

Monitors and reports equipment operational status .

Control the purchasing of supplies for the Sterile Processing Department .

Manages vendor and courier services as pertaining to their effect on sterile processing and adherence to organizational policy and procedures.

Responsible for ensuring appropriate shift and terminal cleaning for departmental areas.

B. Customer Service/ Teamwork

Models excellence in customer service, ensuring the highest standards for both internal and external constituent satisfaction and sets the expectation for employees to do the same .

Serves as a subject matter expert and resource for personnel and others within the organization .

Works collaboratively with other departments to ensure safety, quality, efficiency, and ability to meet customer needs .

Provides ongoing and effective communication with physicians/hospital/clinic department and management, staff and vendor representatives .

C. Personnel

Facilitates the recruitment and selection of department staff .

Provides staff with ongoing feedback and documents appropriately including performance evaluations .

Develops a comprehensive departmental orientation for new staff and ensures completion prior to independent assignment .

Routinely coordinates ongoing training and competency validation .

Provides or coordinates instructions and in-service new products, procedures and equipment to identify and prevent resource loss and maintains patient and staff safety .

Ensures staff attend technical and mandatory training/education .

Develops and/or approves personnel work schedules to ensure instrument and equipment availability .

Manages personnel performance, behavior, and attendance and recommends personnel improvement actions to Executive Director Surgical Services. Initiates disciplinary process after approval by Director and/or Human Resources.

Supports independent functioning of SPD coordinators, assisting with role as needed .

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge

Completion of Sterile Processing education program required

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred

E xperience

Five ( 5 ) years of demonstrated /proven working experience within acute care Sterile Processing Department required

Sterile Processing experience in a Level 1 or 2 trauma designated a cute c are setting highly preferred

Minimum (1) year leadership /supervisory experience within sterile processing required

Three years’ leadership/supervisory experience in Sterile Processing prefer

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

Current Sterile Processing Technician Certification (CSPDT or CRCST) from IAHCSMM

Certification in Leadership (Healthcare Leader) CHL, required within six months of position acceptance

Certificated Endoscope Reprocess (CER), preferred

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

Work performed throughout the facility and in the sterile Central Processing Department.

Frequent standing and walking for majority of shift .

Frequent lifting, pushing and pulling of up to and over 50 lbs. required .

Frequent bending, twisting, squatting, kneeling and reaching

Potential exposure to chemicals, biohazards-blood borne infectious waste requiring the use of PPE.
