Job description

General Laborer

Position Summary

The General Laborer supports operations within a steel warehouse and fabrication department by assisting with material handling, basic processing, and production support activities. This role plays a critical part in maintaining workflow efficiency, ensuring material accuracy, and upholding safety standards in a heavy industrial environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Load, unload, and move steel materials using overhead cranes, forklifts (if trained), or by hand
  • Painting
  • Assist in fabrication processes such as cutting, sawing, grinding, and drilling steel products
  • Band, stack, and stage materials for storage or shipment
  • Identify and verify materials by size, grade, and job requirements
  • Assist machine operators (e.g., saws, burn tables, press brakes) as needed
  • Perform basic measurements using tape measures and gauges
  • Clean and maintain work areas, including removal of scrap and debris
  • Ensure proper labeling and tagging of materials
  • Follow production schedules and supervisor instructions
  • Conduct visual quality checks for defects or damage
  • Adhere strictly to all safety policies, including PPE and lockout/tagout procedures
  • Report safety hazards, damaged materials, or equipment issues promptly
  • Any and all other duties, as requested by the department supervisor

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Previous experience in a steel warehouse, fabrication shop, or manufacturing environment preferred
  • Ability to read a tape measure accurately (required)
  • Basic understanding of material types, sizes, and inventory practices is a plus
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn equipment operation
  • Forklift and/or overhead crane experience preferred (or willingness to be trained)
