Job Title: Steel Detailer & Checker
Company: Firelands Fabrication
Reports to: Detailing and Document Control Supervisor
FLSA: Hourly
Position Summary:
The Steel Detailer & Checker is responsible for producing and verifying accurate fabrication and erection drawings for structural and miscellaneous steel projects. This role supports project execution by interpreting design documents, developing detailed 3D models, generating shop and field drawings, and ensuring compliance with contract documents, industry standards, and company quality procedures.
This position reports to Project Managers for assigned projects and to the Detailing and Document Control Supervisor for overall performance and development.
Essential Functions:
Detailing & Modeling
  • Interpret architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Develop accurate 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings using SDS2 (or similar steel detailing software).
  • Produce shop drawings, erection drawings, and gather sheets for fabrication and field use.
  • Detail bolted and welded connections in accordance with design requirements and industry standards.
  • Generate and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and CNC data for fabrication equipment.
Project Coordination
  • Identify discrepancies, conflicts, and missing information in project documents.
  • Prepare and manage Requests for Information (RFIs), including proposed solutions when appropriate.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, fabricators, and other detailers/checkers.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and production schedules.
Checking & Quality Assurance
  • Review and check drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
  • Ensure all work complies with Firelands Fabrication’s Quality Management System (QMS), procedures, and shop standards.
  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, and geometry for fabrication and erection accuracy.
  • Review and validate CNC files and other digital outputs prior to release to production.
Technical Responsibilities
  • Apply knowledge of geometry (rise, run, radius) and construction tolerances in detailing work.
  • Perform field measurements as required to support accurate detailing.
  • Interpret and apply weld symbols and fabrication standards.
  • Utilize Tekla PowerFab (or equivalent) for material tracking, project management, and data integration.
  • Maintain proficiency in applicable industry codes and standards (AISC, OSHA, AWS, etc.).
Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate project records, including drawings, RFIs, revisions, and quality documentation.
  • Log and track documents in accordance with company procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives in detailing processes and standards.

Qualifications:
Required
  • Minimum of 5 years of structural steel detailing experience.
  • Strong knowledge of AISC standards, steel fabrication practices, and construction processes.
  • Proficiency in SDS2 (or comparable 3D steel detailing software).
  • Ability to read and interpret complex architectural and structural drawings.
  • Experience producing shop drawings, erection drawings, and CNC data.
  • Strong attention to detail with proven checking and quality control experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with Tekla PowerFab or similar fabrication management systems.
  • Familiarity with BIM coordination practices and 3D model integration.
  • Knowledge of AWS welding standards and connection detailing.
