Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Steel Design and Detailing Engineer role based in Birmingham, AL. The Steel Design and Detailing Engineer will be responsible for preparing detailed structural steel drawings, connection designs, and fabrication plans in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and building codes. The role includes reviewing architectural and structural drawings, coordinating with project managers, engineers, and fabricators, and resolving design and detailing issues during the project lifecycle. The engineer will perform structural calculations, verify member sizes and connection details, and ensure that all documentation is accurate, clear, and ready for manufacturing and installation. Day-to-day work also involves maintaining project schedules, contributing to quality control processes, and supporting continuous improvement in design and detailing practices.
Qualifications
  • Strong foundation in structural engineering, including knowledge of steel design principles, load paths, and applicable building codes and standards (e.g., AISC).
  • Proficiency in steel detailing software and CAD tools (such as Tekla, SDS/2, AutoCAD, or similar platforms) and the ability to produce clear shop and erection drawings.
  • Experience interpreting architectural and structural plans, preparing connection details, and coordinating with engineers, fabricators, and construction teams.
  • Attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a commitment to accuracy and quality in all calculations and drawings.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a related field; EIT or PE licensure and prior experience in steel fabrication or construction are beneficial.
  • Familiarity with industry safety standards, project documentation practices, and basic project management or scheduling tools.
